August 9: Happy Bday Doug Williams

Happy birthday Doug Williams. Doug played 4 season with the Redskins from 1986-89 appearing 21 games. As a starting quarterback during that time he delivered only 5 regular season wins. But, for one playoff run, for 1 special day, and for incredible quarter… Williams will never be forgotten. Super Bowl XLIII MVP, throwing for 340 yards and 4TD’s. He played that game after having 6 hours of root canal surgery the day before and not sleeping well for several days. He also tore his knee up in the first quarter; he had to have surgery to repair it after that game. I love Doug Williams, you must watch the YouTube below. In retirement he succeeded the legendary Eddie Robinson as head football coach at his alma mater Grambling State University. He is now the director of professional scouting for the Tamp Bay Buccaneers with aspirations of becoming a general manager. I wouldn’t count this man out. Happy 54th Mr. Williams.

Happy birthday Deion Sanders. Deion had a hall of fame 14 year career…except the one year he played for the Redskins. Deion signed a 7 year $56 million dollar contract with the Redskins prior to the 2000 season. He was part of a free agent class that included Bruce Smith and Jeff George and we all know how that ended. Deion sleepwalked thru one season, intercepting 4 passes and averaging 7.4 yds on punt returns. He also threw in a kick return for –1 yard. No touchdowns, no “primetime.” After the season Deion retired so he could keep most of the $8 million signing he received…basically stealing money from the Redskins and giving them dead cap space in return. Of course he came back to play a few years later after he became a free agent again. You can now see Deion on the NFL network, or on MTV Rock and Jocks being schooled by Nelly. Happy 42nd Mr. Sanders…I’m still bitter.


Happy birthday Hunter Smith. Hunter was brought in this season to cure the Redskin’s punting woes. He’s averaged 43.4 yards per punt during his career and may be the best holder in the history of football. Zorn made a point to talk about him to the fans at fan appreciation day, noting how long his punts are and how much hang time they have. That all sounds good to me, I think our Punters cost us a game or 2 last year! Welcome to Washington Mr. Smith and happy 32nd!


Happy birthday Jarvis Hayes. Jarvis played 4 seasons with the Wizards from 2003-2007. He appeared in 226 games averaging 8.9 points per game. He was named 2nd team All Rookie after his rookie season. Jarvis currently plays for the Nets and has his own website. Happy 28th Mr. Hayes.

August 7: O's Happy Bdays...Not

Happy birthday Geronimo Gil. Geronimo played parts of 5 season with the Orioles from 2001-2005. His best season came in 2002 when he hit 12 home runs and drove in 45. He was solid defensively: throwing out 31% of base runners attempting to steal during his career. After the 02’ season Geronimo bounced between Triple A and the bigs, never playing in more than 64 games. The Orioles released him in 2006 and he’s still playing ball in the Mexican League. Happy 34th Mr. Gil.

Happy birthday Jason Grimsley…not. Jason played 2 seasons for the Orioles in 2004-2005. He went 3-6 with a 4.78 ERA during that time. Worse than those awful numbers, he sold out his teammates (Tejada, Gibbons & Roberts) as anabolic steroid users. Besides cheating with the steroids for nearly 10 years and selling out teammates, he also stole Albert Belle’s corked bat from the umpires room. ESPN named him the 4th biggest cheater in MLB history. No happy birthday for you Jason, you suck.

Redskins TC: Days 7&8 In Review

Question? After a full week of training camp what have we learned?

Answer = The O-line is s-t-r-u-g-g-l-i-n-g!

No matter what website, blog or tweet I read...they all report about the O-line problems. The most glaring thing that I took from the much publicized JC Sports Illustrated story was this quote from Zorn, "Late in the year I could not call a slow-developing play downfield because I knew we couldn't protect Jason." What...WOW! And what did the Redskins do to fix this issue? Nothing, they signed a D-tackle. Can Haynesworth play offensive tackle? Here's a few more highlights from the past 2 days:

August 5/6: Happy Bday Laron Profit

Happy birthday Laron Profit. Laron played for both the Terps and the Wizards. Laron was a 3-year starter at Maryland and ranks in the top 20 in several career statistical categories for them. He had a solid all around game and averaged 12.5 pts, 4.6 rebs and 2.3 ast per game. He played 110 of his 135 career NBA games with the Wizards, spread out over 3 seasons. Take a look at the 3 pointer he hit at the buzzer to beat the Tim Duncan led Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Happy 32nd Mr. Profit..



Happy birthday Pierson Prioleau. Pierson played for the Skins from 2005-2007, playing in 31 games. He played very well on special teams and stepped up at safety after the awful Adam Archuleta debacle. Pierson played for Greg Williams in Buffalo, Washington, Jacksonville and now New Orleans. Pierson is definitely a Williams’s guy. I like Pierson and I’m glad he fought back from the gruesome knee injury he suffered in game 1 of the 2006 season. Pierson also played at Virginia Tech. Happy 32nd Mr. Prioleau.

Happy birthday Darwin Cook. Darwin played for the Bullets during the 87-87 season. He played in all 82 games that year as a backup guard, averaging 7.5 pts. He retired after the 88-89 season (his 8th) with a career avg of 9.5 pts and 3.7 ast per game. In retirement Darwin coached as an assistant at UNLV and Pepperdine. Happy 51st Mr. Cook.

Happy birthday Otis Thorpe. Otis played 1 of his 15 season with the Washington Wizards, in the 98-99 season. He came to the Wizards along with Mitch Richmond, in the trade that sent Chris Webber to the Kings. Otis averaged 11.3 pts and 6.8 rebs in his lone season in DC. For his career he had averages of 14 and 8. Otis ranks in the top 20 all time in several NBA categories including games played and rebounds. Happy 47th Mr. Thorpe.

Fantasy Football League

Last week on Twitter (follow me there) I announced plans for the 1st annual Fatpickled Fantasy Football League. The response was great...just a couple spots remain. If you're interested in possibly playing, email me (the link to my email address is located here on the site,) or contact me via Twitter. Here are some of the details of the league:

Our Honorary Commisioner is no other than Mr. Kenny Mayne. His duties and resposibilities = none, but he asked for the title and I'm giving it to him.

The league is sponsered by The Cooley Zone.

It cost nothing to play.

The league will be set up thru Yahoo Sports, 10 teams, 2 leagues and it's head to head competition.

We will have a live on line draft later this month.

I'm still working on the prizes, but I'm pleased to announce that the winner will receive a signed Chris Cooley jersey and a cool trophy.
