I thought it would be fun to go back and look at what we were saying about Haynesworth last March. For the most part, we all knew this would not end well. Here's some links to several blogs from last year.

Jamie Mottram had 2 posts covering the Haynesworth signing, neither putting him on record as for or against it. He covered it in his own unique way that blog readers have come to love...he was a charming smart-ass. Oh yeah, this shirt was also born.

Ken and Kevin were also cautious and sarcastic in their coverage. From Ken's post entitled Free Agency in Redskins Nation: Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa All At Once!:

Don't ruin this for me with the price tag either. This was my present from the Redskins. Our present. Today I just don't care about long-term consequences. I am going to unwrap my present and play. Our defense is going to rock (theoretically). Our opponents will be hosting half of our defense behind their line on every play (hypothetically). DeAngelo Hall will capitalize on the additional pressure to the tune of double-digit interceptions (supposably).

I beg you, take a second to embrace the fact that two guys who are easily inked to start for us next year and represent upgrades at their positions are on the team. One of them even stomped on a Cowgirl's head! We will wake up from this drunken orgy of careless spending soon enough. Our Walk of Shame will start on Draft Day (probably), and last through the regular season (God, I hope I'm wrong).

As free agency names come and go, in retrospect, decisions always seem so much clearer. The Jason Taylor deal as we all know now was a total bust, and Vinny is taking quite the lashing for it. Over the course of the season (hopefully years), it'll become clear whether the Haynesworth signing was a bust or brilliance.

The Cooley Zone

Tanner Cooley attended Haynesworth's press conference and scored an interview, from TC: Haynesworth Exclusive:

Whatever issues anyone may have about Albert Haynesworth not being a character guy need to be put to rest. I had the chance to meet the guy today after his press and he seemed to be a genuinely nice guy. In the press conference he discussed the issues of his past and I felt he did a great job of putting them to rest stating, "I'm starting a new chapter in my life after my incident and I'm looking forward to adding to it."

As for me? I was bitter that the Skins had signed 2 players for $150+ million, weeks after firing 30+ employees because the economy was slow. I did refer to Haynesworth as a "beast." From Great News… The Recession Is Over:

So while I’m excited as a fan about the product that I will see on the field next fall, I’m not comfortable with the ethics of the organization. 40 employees at an average of 50k per year = 2 million. The teams salary cap for players is $127 million, which by smoke and mirrors the Skins will exceed. Add another 15-20 million for the coaching staff and front office. $155 million committed to just 2 players! It just doesn’t add up.

40 employees lives crushed, their spouses and children deeply effected. Is it all worth it? I think not. There is no grey area here, it’s black and white, there is a right and a wrong. And…it’s just wrong. If the Danny has any integrity he would pick up the phone and personally call the individuals he laid off. He should offer them their jobs back and apologize. But we all know that would never happen.

He’s at Morton’s wining and dining the next player, ordering off the menu, and dangling million$$ in their faces.

Today, I think I speak for all of us when I say "F-off Fat Albert."

It’s been more than a month since I asked the above question on Twitter; the answer is yes and it’s a damn good one. No, it’s not me…although I would love to take credit for this thing of beauty. It’s @FireTrembley on Twitter who has only 29 followers at this point but deserves a lot more.

The site invites users to post their “Tremblefacts.” Recent “users” include Dikembe Mutombo, Brady Anderson and the Warlord from Coming to America. Betty White even posted her 2 cents on Trembley…

The Best Sports Themed Shows Of All-Time

I've read many articles about the greatest sports movies of all-time but I've never scene a list of the greatest sports shows, so here's my list. First of all the rules...no news type shows (Real Sports, Outside the Lines.) No reality shows (Pro's vs. Joes, American Gladiator.) And finally the show has to have a scripted and predominate sports theme...so just because Ray Ramano was a sports writer, that doesn't make Everybody Love Raymond a sports show. What or is your favorite? Which shows did I miss? Let me know in the comments.

Arli$$ is tied for longest running series of any of the top 10 shows, airing for 7 seasons and 80 episodes on HBO. Arli$$ featured many notable athletes in guest starring roles, normally several different athletes in each episode. Robert Wuhl played the title character Arli$$ Michaels who was a sports agent and the show revolved around his agency. Arliss was sort of hit or miss, it could be real good and it could occasionally be pretty bad…but it definitely hit more than it missed.

When I was a kid growing up in the mid 80’s, Saturday mornings weren’t for cartoons, Saturday mornings meant WWF Wrestling and The Baseball Bunch. The Baseball Bunch was a syndicated series that aired for 3 seasons from 1982-85. Johnny Bench was the leader of the bunch with supporting roles from Tom Lasorda and the San Diego Chicken. It was so cheesy but it was so good…bad uniforms, bad hair, awesome mustaches and bad attempts at humor. Some of the best baseball players of the era would stop by to teach the Bunch about baseball including Lou Pinella who tore his rotator cuff while filming the show…he was batting against the San Diego Chicken. Pinella had previous run-ins with the Chicken and was not a fan, the injury ultimately ended Pinella's playing career.

Sports Night aired for 2 seasons and 45 episodes on ABC from 1998-2000. SportsCenter was at the height of it's fame and this show aimed to capitalize on that...but the show never found it's identity. Was it a comedy or was it a drama? The show varied from week to week and was canceled after season 2. The show had offers from cable stations including HBO, where it could have found it's legs and found a spot higher on this list...but creator Aaron Sorkin wanted to concentrate on another show he was working on, The West Wing. Basically started the televisions careers of Felicity Huffman and the like able Peter Krause.

Friday Night Lights is one of the best shows on television today and easily the best show on this list. Great story lines, great music, hot chicks and gifted actors. The football scenes are filmed to look realistic and you want to strap on your chin strap and play your heart out for Coach Taylor. Season 4 starts its NBC run this Friday and this season may be the best yet (the season has already aired on DirecTV.) You do not want to miss episode 5 and the amazing acting job by Zach Gilford. Did I mention this show featured Minka Kelly in 52 episodes...FNL wins!

The Bronx Is Burning Trailer

The Bronx is Burning aired 8 episodes on ESPN in 2007. I guess it was billed as a mini-series but 8 episodes is a season. The show recreated the 1977 season of the New York Yankees and the turmoil that surrounded the team, specifically the trio of George Steinbrenner, Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson. The Son of Sam was also terrorizing the city that summer and the show used that as a subplot. Great acting by John Turturro (always great)as Billy Martin and Daniel Sunjata/Oliver Platt as Jackson and Steinbrenner.

1st and Ten aired for 7 seasons and 80 episodes on HBO from 1984-91. It was one of HBO's first original series and featured OJ Simpson in a starring role. The show was a comedy in the "North Dallas Forty" vein. 1st and Ten was a football show on TV when such a thing just didn't exist and it was on cable so you could get some nudity and bad language in the mix...it deserves some props.

Eastbound and Down : Kenny Powers is a champion

Eastbound and Down has only aired 1 season and 6 episodes to date but...Kenny Powers is the F'in man! Season 2 is set to begin filming this month and will feature KP pitching in the Mexican League...oh yeah, this is going to be good! Produced by Will Ferrell and starring Danny Mcbride, the show definitely has talent. The hardest job in television...McBride's pitching coach, he does throw like a girl.

The White Shadow was a basketball themed show that aired for 3 seasons from 1978-81 on CBS. The plot was that a white retired NBA player takes over as head basketball coach in a predominately black and hispanic school and all the issues that surround that scenario.

Playmakers was the first original drama series to come from ESPN and it had loads of potential...until the NFL shut it down. The NFL was none to happy with ESPN for airing all of the NFL's dirty laundry (steroids, substance/domestic abuse, etc.) NFL players called it accurate, ESPN called it quits after just 11 episodes.

Redskins Draft: Could've, Would've, Should've

Let me start out by saying that I’m happy with the Redskins 2010 draft. I’m not overly excited and I don’t think this years draft is in any danger of being confused with 1981’s haul…but it was a good solid 7. It will be a couple of seasons before we truly know how any of the players drafted will pan out in the NFL but it’s never too early to scrutinize the picks, that’s where I come in. It’s the could’ve had this player, should’ve drafted this guy and would’ve drafted him if I were running the draft post.

Rd 1 pick 4 Trent Williams OT
Could’ve had…any player not named Bradford, Suh or McCoy

This is the pick that will face the most scrutiny but they needed an O-lineman and they drafted one, props for that. Okung was on the board and these 2 players will be linked as pros.

Rd 2 pick 37 Donovan McNabb QB
Could’ve had…Sergio Kindle OLB

You don’t take a project like McNabb with the 5th pick…oh wait, that was an Eagles fan 11 years ago. So we didn’t really draft McNabb, but we traded this pick for him. I’d rather have McNabb than any other QB that was available in this year's draft, great pick. Kindle would be a great complement to Orakpo and the Skins need linebackers for the 3-4 defense that they are switching to. Instead, Kindle goes to the Ravens who know a thing or two about the linebackers and the 3-4 defense.

Rd 3 pick 68 Jeremy Jarmon DT
Could’ve had…Morgan Burnett S

Jarmon was a supplemental pick last season who produced 8 tackles in 11 games last season before tearing his ACL. Jarmon has potential and may see time at OLB and DE in 2010. Burnett is a “ball hawking safety w/ range to cover sideline to sideline.” I think the Skins need a player fitting that description.

Perry Riley

Rd 4 pick 103 Perry Riley LB
Could’ve had…Bruce Campbell OT

Riley has a legitimate chance to start and the Skins needed LB’s so I’m good with this pick. Campbell is a “workout warrior” who stock skyrocketed during the combine…why is it always Maryland players who rise so much during the combine? Vernon Davis, Heyward-Bey, Al Davis fell for it again. Campbell is a project, but he was originally thought to be a 1st round pick, so he was a great value pick here.

Rd 5 pick 135 Adam Carriker DT
Could’ve had…Perrish Cox CB

Another trade with the Redskins receiving Carriker, a former 1st round pick of the Rams just 3 years ago. Carriker missed all of last season and hasn’t played well when healthy. The Skins need help at CB and didn’t draft any, Cox would’ve been nice here.

Dennis Morris

Rd 6 pick 174 Dennis Morris TE
Could’ve had…Jonathan Dwyer RB

Morris will play FB/TE/HB for the Skins and appears to be a bad-ass blocker and special teams player, which may spell the end for Mike Sellers. However, Morris was not ranked in the top 50 TE’s entering the draft and may have been available with one of the 7th round picks. Dwyer was ranked as one of the best RB’s available but his stock dropped because of a positive test for weed (Randy Moss, Warren Sapp.) Dwyer would have been a steal here and a great addition to a crowded, but old, backfield.

Could’ve had…George Selvie DE/OLB

Don’t know a lot about Morris but he’s supposed to excel in the return game and the Skins are certainly lacking in that area. Selvie was projected to be a top 15 pick had he came out after junior year, but the poor bastard returned to school, faced double and triple teams and watched Jason Pierre-Paul steal his thunder and his $$. You can’t tell me a guy drops from top 15 to nearly undrafted in 1 season, especially one who hasn’t suffered injury. He would have been a great pick as an OLB/DE hybrid in the 3-4.

Rd 7 pick 229 & 231 Eric Cook C, Selvish Capers OL
Could’ve had…WTF cares at this point?

However I hope Capers holds out so I can say, “that Selvish bastard needs to get in camp.” “Selvish bastard needs to stop thinking about himself.” Oh Selvish…the possibilities are endless.

Redskins Draft: Random Thoughts

Random Thoughts from the draft:

I'm happy the Skins drafted Trent Williams, I preferred Okung but I'll take the most "athletic" tackle in the draft. An added bonus, he can chew gum and talk at the same time.

Tonight will be very boring unless the Redskins can get creative with trades and get themselves a 2nd or 3rd round pick. This draft is very deep and a lot of talented players will be available in the next 50 picks.

The Haynesworth trade possibilities are dwindling. The Titans say they're out and the Lions/Bucs both drafted DT's with the 2nd and 3rd overall picks. Albert is our best bargaining chip to get back in rounds 2 or 3. Of course, the Skins could trade a 1st rounder next year for someone they really like in round 2 this season.

I can't see how the Redskins can just release Jason Campbell for nothing. He was a 1st round pick and has played fairly well over the last 3 seasons. You have to get something for him, even if it's a late round pick next season. If not, pay him the $3 million to be your backup, McNabb always misses 2 or 3 games a year.

Roger Goodell must be sore today from all the chest bumping and bear hugs he received last night.

Did anybody see when the cameras cut to Tebow to get his reaction to the Steelers taking his college teammate, Maurkice Pouncey? I guess they were expecting the Tebow household to explode with excitement, instead they got zero reaction. Zero.

Did anybody see the exchanges between Jamie Dukes and Jim Mora Jr? They don't seem to like each other much. Highlights included Dukes saying that Mora was still getting paid $15 million to say good things about the Seahawks and that if you don't draft the right people you end up fired after 1 seasons and working in TV.

Big Ben heard his future chants for the upcoming season..."she said no, she said no." To which Big Ben responded "don't speak with your mouth full." Thats wrong, I know.

Finally, if the Redskins find a way to pick tonight here are some of the guys I like that remain available that will probably go in the 2nd or 3rd rounds:

Redskins Draft: Trading Albert May Be The Key

The key to the Redskins draft may not be the #4 overall pick in the draft, but what value they can receive in a trade for Albert Haynesworth. If the Redskins are willing to take the $32 million dollar hit to move Albert…and in an uncapped season I believe they are…he’s a valuable trade commodity.

Over the past 2 years several inferior D-tackles have been moved for draft picks. In 2009 Shaun Rogers was traded to the Browns for a 3rd round pick, he immediately signed a contract with $20 million in guarantees. In 2008 the Browns traded their 2nd round pick for Corey Williams, he immediately signed a contract worth $16 million in guarantees. Also in 2008, a declining Kris Jenkins was traded to the Jets for a 3rd & 5th round pick, he immediately signed a contract for $20 million guaranteed. If you go back further…who can forget the Redskins trading Sean Gilbert to the Panthers for two 1st round picks in 98, he signed immediately for $46 million.

Albert is a better player than all of those guys and he’s also only one year removed from being the biggest catch of the 2009 free agency period. Albert’s guaranteed only $9 million over the next 3 years…he’s a steal. The Bucs, Titans and Lions could all be players for Albert and he could/should command a minimum of a 2nd & 3rd rounder in return. If you were a NFL executive would you rather take an unknown talent like Suh or McCoy and guarantee those players $30-35 million or trade for Albert and pay only $9 million?

Adding additional picks in the 2nd or 3rd rounds could be the key for the Redskins, this draft is very deep and talent will be available. It’s clear that Albert no longer is a fit for the Redskins defense and he isn’t interested in becoming a team player moving forward. Pull the trigger, cut your losses.

I also look for Campbell to be moved during the draft. However, with QB positions being so muddled across the league, it may be for a 4th rounder next year, or with fingers crossed a 3rd rounder…Al Davis? Looking forward to the drama.

Last week the Outback Pro Am took place here in Florida. It's a stop on the Champions Tour...or the "old geezer" tour. The one exciting thing about this event is that is does feature celebrities that have included Bill Murray, Jerry Rice, Kevin Costner, Mark Wahlberg and Michael J. Fox, to name a few, How Michael J. Fox can play golf is a testament to him and his determination in his fight against Parkinson's.

Anyway, one of the professional contestants in the event was Tiger Woods good friend Mark O'Meara, who would finish 2nd in the tourney. Mark showed major improvement in his short game compared to his previous outing at the Masters. He dropped this little tidbit to the St Pete Times:

"I got a putting lesson from Tiger last week at Augusta," said O'Meara, who averaged 1.3 putts per green Friday. "He had his camera phone out there. He just told me to swing a little bit more off to the right and feel the toe release instead of coming over it. I agree with him. That's what I do."

Now, who cares about a 53 year old golfers putting...not me. However, I'm very intrigued to know that Tiger's got a camera phone. I mean, we've already read all the text messages that came from that phone (link contains strong Tiger language)...can the pictures be far behind? A pictures worth a thousand words. Stay tuned...

Blogging Baseball At FWGMLB

In addition to my full time job, blogging for my own site, being a good husband/father and trying to keep up with an eating and alcohol problem...I've decided to blog baseball for www.fwgmlb.com. The site's owner, Rob Lunn, has been after me to blog for him in some capacity for quite awhile. When the chance came to blog about the sport that I love the most, the game of baseball, I decided to jump on board. Rob's a talented writer who's taken a college project and turned it into a career in media.

The site is just a baby at this point (2 weeks old) but we are hoping for big things. Please check it out, bookmark it, subscribe to it, follow it and tell your friends. Batting Practice With Trey Hillman

It was the summer of 1989, I was a few months away from obtaining my drivers license and a few months past finally cutting the mullet that I had been working the previous few years. The better part of that summer was spent playing baseball, wiffleball or hitting wadded up paper balls with a window squeegee. When I wasn’t playing ball, I was following it. Specifically, I was following my hometown single A minor league team, the Prince William Cannons.

It didn’t matter that the Cannons were affiliated with the Yankees, although it would have been a lot better if they weren’t. The Cannons put together a magical 2nd half to that season and ended up winning the league championship. I was there to see a lot of those games and no player or coach had a bigger impact on that team than current Royals manager Trey Hillman.

The tiny stadium in Woodbridge, Va has seen a lot of great ballplayers play for the hometown Prince William team there over the years. Albert Pujols, Barry Bonds, Bernie Williams or Andy Pettitte…ring any bells? However, it was not any of those players that I’ll remember most about watching those teams as a kid, I’ll never forget Trey.

The records show that Stump Merrill was the manager of the 89’ Cannons, however he missed a lot of games due to illness. Trey was the 3rd base coach and took over the team in Stump's absence. I used to stand along the 3rd base line and chat with Trey during games and he’d do cool things like give me foul balls. Sometime during that summer it was announced that the Cannons would be holding a camp for youth baseball players, I signed up right away. My buddy Chris and I turned out to be the only 2 non-grade school kids to show up for the camp. We were both on the high school baseball team and had talent. It was during this 2 day camp that Trey took us to the side and did what comes naturally to him, he coached baseball.

The camp was set to take place on the practice fields outside the main stadium. However, Trey took Chris and I inside the main stadium and worked with us for the better part of 2 days, personal 1 on 1 instruction with a future major league manager. Although I would later play organized games on that very field and eventually play in several minor league stadiums in my baseball career, that was the first time I got the experience of playing in that kind of scenery. It was super cool to walk thru the clubhouse and step out onto the manicured field and have the whole place to ourselves. Trey went thru bucket and after bucket of balls, pitching batting practice for hours in the hot Virginia sun…I was in the zone at the plate the rest of that summer. At the time Trey was just 26 years old, his own professional career (3 years in the minors) only recently over. I’m sure there was a lot of other things he would have rather been doing…no I’m sure there wasn’t anything else he’d rather be doing, he seemed to be enjoying himself as much as Chris and I.

Trey would be named manager of the Oneonta Yankees single A team in 1990. I’ve never seen him again. He toiled in the minors for 11 seasons as a minor league manager, reaching the Yankees AAA level. He then went overseas to manage in Japan for 5 seasons, winning a championship there. Finally, in 2007, after nearly 20 years in the minors and Japan, Trey was named as manager of the Royals. He worked hard and made his dreams come true.

As for me, I got my driver’s license which allowed me to score chicks and booze. I spent more time focusing on those 2 things than I did baseball. I now work in the automobile industry and blog for some guy named the “Fat White Guy.” I’m living the dream!

4/16-4/18 Happy Bdays

Happy birthday Wilbur Marshall. Wilbur played 5 seasons for the Redskins from 1988-92. Marshall played in all 80 games over that span, despite battling many injuries during that time. Marshall tallied 621 tackles, 24.5 sacks, 12 int’s and 13 forced fumbles during his Redskins career. I’ve written before about how I feel about Wilbur, he had an 8 year span where he was one of the best linebackers in the game and is a Hall of Famer in my mind. Happy 48th Mr. Marshall.

Happy birthday Fred Smoot. Fred played 7 seasons for the Redskins from 2001-2009. Drafted in the 2nd round of the 2001 draft by Marty Schottenheimer, Fred would go on to appear in 104 games as a Redskin. Fred totaled 346 tackles and 18 int’s during his Redskins tenure. Although he was a fan favorite for his outgoing personality and quotable interviews, Fred’s skills had diminished the past couple seasons and he was released in March of this year. Happy 31st Mr. Smoot.

Happy birthday Richie Petitbon. Richie played 2 seasons at safety for the Redskins from 71-72. He’s more well known for spending 16 seasons on the Redskins coaching staff which included succeeding Joe Gibbs as head coach in 93’. Although the 93’ season was a disaster, Richie should be remembered as one of the great defensive coordinators of his time. For over a decade his teams ranked consistently in the top 10 each season in total defense. He was committed to the Redskins and turned down several head coaching jobs during his Redskins coaching career, that loyalty got him fired after 1 season at the helm. To my surprise, Richie has never coached in the NFL or football of any kind since then. Thought for sure some team would lure him back out of retirement. A quick look at his statistics as a player shows that he played 14 seasons in 3 different decades, intercepted 48 balls and was a 4 time Pro Bowler. He also returned an interception 101 yards for a touchdown…can you see old Richie lumbering 101 yards? Happy 72nd Mr. Petitbon.

Happy birthday Walt Williams. “The Wizard” played 4 seasons for the Terps from 1988-92. The fact that Walt stayed all 4 years is what makes him one of my favorite Terps of all-time. During his tenure the Terps were facing heavy NCAA sanctions and the program was in the dumps. Besides turning down the chance to transfer to another school, Walt also decided against turning pro early. This helped the Terps stay competitive and the program to start restoring its legacy on the national level. Walt was a forward/guard who wore #42. His game was similar, in my opinion, to Magic Johnson’s. Walt could pass, rebound and shoot well inside or outside. He averaged 26.8 ppg, 5.6rpg and 3.6 apg his senior season. Walt would take his high socks to the NBA and had a decent 11 year career. Happy 40th Mr. Williams.

Editor's note: I'm not 100% sure what the correct way to spell Wilber Marshall's first name is, Wilber or Wilbur? Not sure, it's spelled both ways in many diffrent publications on the net. Redskins Of Lore: Neal Olkewicz

From 1979 to 1989 the heart of the Redskins defense was found right in the middle of the field, wearing #52. Neal "Olk Dog" Olkewicz appeared in 150 regular season games and although tackles were not an official stat at the time, Neal surpassed (at least) 1,500 tackles in his career. Yep, Neal averaged over 10 tackles per game.

The Redskins dynasty era of 1982-1991 was not comprised of flashy free agents who commanded $100 million dollar contracts and huge signing bonuses. The Redskins roster of that era was made up of a lot of guys who were low round or undrafted players who worked hard and got every ounce out of their ability and more. Neal was undrafted out of Maryland, but started for 11 years in the NFL, winning 2 Super Bowls and he's one of the 70 Greatest Redskins.

While I was recently thumbing thru my old Redskins photos and autographs, I came across the above picture. The picture came from a 1987 commemorative magazine celebrating the Redskins Super Bowl win. The short story talks about how Neal made 2 of the biggest defensive plays the Redskins had during the playoffs, plays that enabled the Skins to make it to the Super Bowl. It also talks about how Neal, the team's player rep, kept the Skins together during the strike. Although Neal seemed to be in the twilight of his career, he came back in 88' and was the named the team's defensive MVP. He was...a bad-ass.

I did find Neal's autograph, it's on a regular piece of paper. Simple, straight forward and after nearly 25 years, still holding up strong...just like old #52. Thanks Neal.

Happy birthday Charles Mann. Charles played defensive end for the Redskins for 11 seasons from 1983-93. #71 was a 4-time Pro Bowler who appeared in 163 games as a Redskin. Charles finished his Skins career with 82 sacks and 784 tackles. Charles also is a member of the Redskins Ring of Fame and one of the 70 Greatest Redskins. In retirement Charles started a business with Art Monk. Happy 49th Mr. Mann.

Happy birthday Mike Nelms. Mike played 5 seasons for the Redskins from 1980-84. Mike was an excellent punt/kick returner and backup defensive back who wore #21. Mike appeared in 68 games as a Redskin and was a 3-time Pro Bowler. Mike’s best season came in 1981 when he averaged 29.7 yards per kick return and 10.9 per punt return including 2 TD’s. Mike was also a member of the NFL’s 1980’s All Decade Team and one of the 70 Greatest Redskins. In retirement Mike was the long time owner of a Toyota dealership in Culpepper, VA. Happy 55th Mr. Nelms.

Happy birthday Mike Devereaux. Mike played 7 seasons for the Orioles over 2 separate stints between 1989-96. #12 came to the Orioles from the Dodgers in exchange for Mike Morgan and appeared in 878 games during his O’s tenure. Mike hit .251 with 94 HR’s and 403 RBI’s playing mostly CF for the Orioles. His best season came in 92’ when he hit .276-24-107. In retirement Mike now serves as a coach for the Orioles single A affiliate the Delmarva Shorebirds. Happy 47th Mr. Devereaux.

Happy birthday Lee Lacy. Lee played 3 seasons for the Orioles from 1985-87. #27 appeared in 338 games for the O’s, batting .280 with 27 HR’s and 123 RBI’s. Lee retired after the 87’ season, his 16th season in the bigs. Happy 62nd Mr. Lacy.

Per Tory Aikman's interview on ESPN radio, the Dallas Cowboys are set to take on the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field at 4PM Week 1 of the 2010 NFL Season...it's officially Dallas Week!

The official 2010 NFL schedule hasn't been released, so at this point it's strictly rumor. However, if the guy who's going to be announcing the game knows the week, location and time...it's safe to speculate it's the truth. Let's get it on. Besides having a chip on his shoulder for the Eagles, Donovan should be seeking some retaliation against the Cowboys.

Here's a little something to get us Skin's fans in the mood, the demolition of Texas Stadium. The hole was still in the roof so god saw it...and RFK is still standing nearly 15 years after the Redskins last played there...RFK wins!!!

What's JC Worth?

With Donovan McNabb set to be introduced as the Redskins new QB tomorrow afternoon and talks of a contract extension immanent, the question is what do the Skins do with Jason Campbell?

I guess the obvious thing to do is trade him...but you have to get value in return. I've read reports today that put his value anywhere between a 2nd to 5th round pick. I would run around my neighborhood buck naked in a Shanahan mask if they could get a 2nd rounder for JC. That would basically mean that you traded McNabb straight up for JC and I think anyone would sign off on that deal. If JC's value is a 5th rounder, then you keep him as a backup. I think the over/under is a 3rd rounder, if you can get a 3rd rounder or better you gotta pull the trigger.

Thru all the shit JC has been thru over the past year, he's been a true gentleman. He's never had a coach or front office executive stand behind him and say "this is our guy." Instead he's remained professional as countless names were rumored to replace him. My hope is that JC can be moved to another team where he'll get a shot to remain a starter in the NFL.

Really...the Redskins? No Shit?

Confused? Depressed? Numb? Dumbfounded…words cannot express my thoughts on the Donovan McNabb trade. Are the Redskins better? Yes, they probably are, but I’m in need of a support group.

I hate Donovan McNabb, I’m on record many times documenting my hatred. And at this point…right now…I still hate him. I have this weird feeling in the pit of my stomach, like someone close to me has done something very evil. Why would your division rival trade you “the greatest player in the history of their franchise?”

I have an analogy for that. My good friend once bought a new high-def TV and had his old projection big screen still in his basement. In passing he told me it could be mine…for free, all I had to do was pick it up and take it away. Sure, the TV was a little older, but it was big, and I had watched it back in the day and it had performed well. My roommate and I picked up this big awkward TV and took it to our house. Once we got the thing in the house and fired it up, we realized we had a huge hunk of trash taking up precious space in the living room. Meanwhile, my buddy had gotten rid of his trash and was sitting at home enjoying his new TV.

Other thoughts about the trade:

Colt Brennan needs to sell #5 for as much cash as he can possibly get! Milk McNabb for all it’s worth….the QB position is getting very crowded, it may be Colt’s severance pay.

McNabb is set to be introduced on Tuesday, the same day Sam Bradford is visiting.

The Redskins have an awesome roster, if it was 2005.

Winning fixes everything.

Old Redskins Park Autographs Part 2

Back in the day Redskins Park used to offer 8x10 B&W's of the players for $2.00 (if I can remember correctly.) I'm not sure if this is still offered today and I'm not sure if B.J. still works there, but if she does...she'd be the one to tell you if they do. B.J. was/is the long time receptionist at Redskins Park and would be an awesome interview, Matt Terl? She's probably got more stories than the players, coaches and front office combined. Below are some of my B&W's.

Greatest KR in the history of the NFL. Look closely at this picture...there's so much to love. He's working the pinky ring, gold watch and a Redskins gold medallion necklace!

Darrell's got one of the greatest smiles I've ever seen, I think his smile could cover most of the WR's in the NFL today...not to mention that at age 50 he's still faster than most players in the NFL.

The mullet, the stache. If you never got to play the Donnie Warren game with Fatpickle and Porkboy...then you missed out, that game and Donnie will live forever!

If you've ever been to the Ice House in Herndon, Va...then you've been to my Grandmother's old bar. It used to be Margaret's Inn and it was a place many Redskins visited in the late 70's to blow off steam and drink a few beers. Riggo knew my Nanny well.

Mark was on IR the year he signed this picture, with one of those mysterious injuries that would come up late in the preseason. Gibb's young QB's always came up with those phantom injuries back in the day. Give them a clipboard and make them wear an ugly sweater until they're ready to play. Anyway, he was healthy enough to sign this picture and toss the nerf football around with me.

Old Redskins Park Autographs Pt. 1

You've heard stories of my days spent at the old Redskins Park collecting autographs and memories. I thought I would start posting some of the collectibles I acquired during that time. Here's a look at some of the football cards I had signed back in the 80's. Next week I'll post my 8x10 black & whites, which are my favorite items.

87 Topps Wilber Marshall. Wilber had a very unique way of signing; he's left-handed and signs his name upside down and from right to left. Wilber was a bad ass!

1984 Topps Dexter Manley. There are many reasons to love this card, the mohawk is definitely one of them and the fact that Dexter even signed it "Mr. D" for me. Alas, this card and a few other autographs I obtained that day were F'd up by a faulty marker. Son of a...

1983 Topps Dexter Manley. Dexter was always super-cool and never at a loss for words...he was also so full of energy. The back of this card says that Dexter served as a Deputy Sheriff in Virginia...really?

1986 Topps Jim Lachey. Don't remember a whole lot about the interactions with Jim other than he was quiet and polite. Thank you Bobby Beathard for the Jay Schroeder for Lachey swap.

1988 Topps Kelvin Bryant. Kelvin was one my favorite players during the 80's. He was a great all-around back and had a 13 catch 130 yard 2 TD day against the Giants in 86', it says so on the back of the card!

1984 Topps Joe Jacoby. Jake's always been good to me, I'm hoping he's the next Redskin in the Hall of Fame. All he did was block Lawrence Taylor, Reggie White and Too Tall Jones for a decade...and did it well.

1984 Topps Darrell Green. This is Darrell's rookie card and is probably the only one in the group that's worth much $$. Doesn't matter, I wouldn't sell any of these for any price...well I'd cut Bostic loose.

1979 Topps Doug Williams. This is also a rookie card and it's mint. Doug also signed his SI Super Bowl cover for me, "To Doug, From Doug." Unfortunately, it was with the same sucky marker Dexter used to sign "Mr. D." Son of a...

1987 Topps Charles Mann. Charles was always super nice and cool. The faulty marker makes another appearance. Son of a...

1988 Topps Earnest Byner. Earnest was the consummate professional as a player and didn't get the respect he deserved as a coach. Thanks Bobby Beathard for Mike Olpihant for Earnest Byner.

1982 Topps Dave Butz. Anyone remember the "Big Bad Butz" song made for Dave Butz? I need to find that, help me. I googled big bad butz and nothing but porn sites comes up. Per the back of Dave's card "he performs week-in and week-out, playing often with injuries, and continues to get the job done in fine fashion." I agree Topps, I agree.

1984 Topps Jeff Bostic. Jeff Bostic was not cool, he was not nice...it says so on the back of his card.

Happy birthday Moses Malone. Moses played 2 seasons for the Bullets from 1986-88. The Petersburg, VA native came to the Bullets (along w/ Terry Catledge & Harvey Grant) from the 76er’s in exchange for Cliff Robinson and Jeff Ruland. Moses made the All-Star team both of seasons in D.C. and the Bullets made the playoffs both seasons. Moses averaged 22.2 PPG and 11.2 RPG as a Bullet. Moses retired after the 95’ season as a 13 time All-Star, 3 time MVP and one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history.

Happy birthday Chris Hoiles. Chris played 10 seasons with the Orioles from 1989-1998. Chris is a member of the Orioles Hall of Fame and widely regarded one of the Orioles greatest all-time catchers. Chris came to the Orioles in a trade with Detroit, in exchange for Fred Lynn. Chris would go on to appear in 894 games as an Oriole, batting .262 with 151 HR’s and 449 RBI’s. His best season came in 1993 when he batted .310-29-82. In retirement Chris managed the York Revolution of the Independent League and also runs a hunting “fantasy camp.” Happy 45th Mr. Hoiles.

Happy birthday Manny Alexander. Manny played parts of 4 seasons with the O’s from 1992-96. Manny at one time was appointed the heir apparent to Cal Ripken at shortstop; he ended up starting just 6 games at SS for the Orioles. Manny made 3 errors in those 6 starts, Cal made 3 the entire 1990 season. #6 appeared in 154 games as an Oriole, batting just .206. Manny was later linked to steroids…he must have had a horrible supplier; he hit 15 homeruns in 11 seasons. Most recently Manny played in Italy and the minors for the Phillies. Happy 39th (he’s probably 45) Mr. Alexander.

Happy birthday Brad Edwards. Brad played 4 seasons as hard-hitting safety for the Redskins from 1990-93. Brad appeared in all 64 games during his Redskins tenure. Brad collected 13 INT’s and 498 tackles as a Redskin. Brad had an incredible game in the 91’ Super Bowl, intercepting 2 passes and making several bone-crushing hits. In retirement Brad does some radio work and also serves as the AD for Newberry College. Happy 44th Mr. Edwards.

Happy birthday Joe Salave’a. Joe played 3 seasons for the Redskins from 2004-06. #95 was a defensive tackle and a fan favorite. The American Samoan had 2.5 sacks and 70 tackles during his Redskins tenure. After 9 years in the NFL Joe retired and is now an assistant coach at San Jose State. Happy 35th Mr. Salave’a.

Greivis Vasquez played his last game in a Maryland Terrapins uniform today, a heartbreaking 85-83 loss to Michigan State in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament. If the final 2 minutes were the epitaph for his career, it would read like this.

That's 10 points, a steal and an assist in the final 2 minutes. He was Reggie F'in Miller in Madison Square Garden! He took the team on his back and he carried them. And it was vintage Greivis, out of control...fall away jumpers in the lane, using the glass and in heavy traffic...it.was.perfect.

Greivis was both frustrating and fun as hell. He was like a crazy girlfriend that you know is certified, but you can't cut her loose cuz the sex is great. I can't tell you how many times I've watched him in a game and screamed NOOOOoooo Greiv what the YESSSSSSSSSS, as he took some stupid shot that he should have never taken, but he hit them more often than not. The debate will be thrown around in bars and on blogs for many years to come, where doe Greivis rank on the Terps all-time list of great players? For me, he's now #3, behind Juan and Bias. Happy birthday Harold Baines. Harold played 7 seasons with the Orioles from 1993-2000. An Eastern Shore native, Harold hit .301 with 107HR’s and 378 RBI’s during his O’s tenure. His best season came in 99’ when he hit .322-24-81. Harold deserves to be in the HOF as he finished his career with 384 HR’s, 1,628 RBI’s and a career average of .289…I think it’s safe to say he also did it steroid-free. In retirement Harold got into coaching and is currently the 1B coach for the White Sox. Happy 51st Mr. Baines.

Happy birthday Todd Yoder. Todd has played the last 4 seasons for the Redskins and is currently a free agent. Todd is an excellent blocking TE who has appeared in 61 games, also filling in well at the H-back and fullback spots when called upon. Not known for his pass-catching, Todd has caught 6 TD’s for the Redskins. Todd has also turned into a fan favorite who has made funny videos over at the Cooley Zone. I hope to see Todd back next season. Happy 32nd Mr. Yoder.

Happy birthday John Hall. John played 4 seasons for the Redskins from 2003-2006, appearing in 40 games during his tenure. John was a pretty decent kicker who wore #10 and made 78.3% of his FG’s as a Redskin. John’s best season came in 03’ when he made 25 FG’s and scored 101 pts. John was released by the Redskins in 2006 and retired shortly after due to multiple leg injuries…not a good thing to have when you are a kicker. In retirement John opened up a restaurant in Florida. Happy 36th Mr. Hall.

May I Have Your Autograph Mr. Clark?

I spent a lot of time as a kid at the old Redskins Park. It was quite different back then, the old park had virtually no security and was small in comparison to the current RP in Ashburn. I was able to parlay my time at Redskins Park into many memorable moments and adventures. I filmed part of a practice and filmed a semi-interview with Dexter Manley. I tossed a nerf football around with Rickey Sanders and Mark Rypein. I also helped a coke delivery man deliver cokes into the locker room, where I proceeded to watch highlights of the 87’ Super Bowl with Reggie Branch and Ravin Caldwell. Great times for a 13 yr old kid.

I was also able to obtain many autographs, autographs from virtually every great player from the 80’s. Gary Clark was recently called out by Larry Johnson for not giving an autograph to LJ when LJ was a little kid. LJ turned that experience into a positive one and now signs every autograph he’s asked for, until the last fan is finished. If that is true, then I admire him for doing so. Quite frankly, I can’t imagine how any reasonable fan would expect an athlete to sign for everyone, every time. I also can’t imagine how fans can ask an athlete to sign an autograph while the athlete is eating dinner, or engaged in something else that requires the athletes attention. Regardless, I want to tell you about my Gary Clark experience.

I was visiting Redskins Park in January of 1988, the last day before the Redskins headed off to San Diego to completely destroy the Broncos 42-10. I arrived early that day and was the only person in the lobby when Gary Clark walked right by me at a brisk pace, headed upstairs to where the admin offices were located. I quickly asked Gary if he would sign an autograph for me, he informed me that he was in a hurry and could not sign for me. Even at 13 years old, I remember this being a WTF moment? I’m the only person in this lobby and he’s not going to take 30 seconds to sign for me? He spent more time explaining why he couldn’t sign than it actually would have taken to sign. I was bummed.

A few hours later Redskins Park was a madhouse. Hundreds of fans had congregated at the park to see the Super Bowl Champions off. The lobby was now shoulder to shoulder and I was now a small fish in a big pond. Players were sneaking out the side and back to avoid the rush of fans. I was now sitting on the stairs leading up to the 2nd floor admin offices. I had managed to get a few autographs before the larger adults had squeezed me out of my prime location by the locker room door and forced me over to the stairs. My autograph collecting opportunities had taken a serious hit at this point.

As I was sitting on the stairs watching all the mayhem, I heard a psst, psst noise coming from the 2nd floor above my head. As I turned and looked up I was amazed to see Gary Clark waving me up the stairs. I collected my things and bounded up the stairs to meet Gary and who else should be sitting up on the 2nd floor…Sam Huff and Sonny Jurgensen, who was enjoying a large cigar. Gary happily signed for me and even promised to catch a TD for me in the Super Bowl (he did.) As an added bonus I was able to also secure the autographs of 2 Hall of Famers.

Maybe Gary felt bad about the encounter we had earlier and decided to sign for me, maybe he really was busy and couldn’t sign for me at the earlier time. It really doesn’t matter, he came thru for me big time and I’ll never forget it. On a separate and totally unrelated note, I ran into Gary at Camelot in DC in the late 90’s. He was sitting alone at a table with a bible. What does that have to do with anything? Nothing, it’s just unusual to see a man in a strip joint with a bible.

I thank Gary for that moment and all of the Redskins that I met during my childhood that were always super cool and gave me memories to last a lifetime. It’s really hard to form an opinion of someone in a single moment in time. Just because an athlete doesn’t want to, or can’t sign for everyone doesn’t mean they’re bad people. Gary Clark was cool to me…now if you want an example of a D-bag (and this is based on several meetings,) this is your guy.

Larry Johnson...Yes, No, Maybe?

I must say that when I wrote last week about the Redskins having a slow developing plan and how I couldn't wait to see how it played out, I never imagined the scenario of the Skins signing another 30+ running back. I mean, I'm still surprised we didn't get rid of the one we had! 30+ running backs are supposed to be over the hill, so why are we collecting them?

On paper, I don't like this signing at all... but the games are not played on paper, they are played by little men inside our TV's...thanks for that line Kenny Mayne. Something tells me in my gut that LJ may have something left in the tank and maybe that's what the Skins game plan is, gut decisions. Hey, 40 GUT was a zone blocking play, right?

Anyway, the signing of LJ is curious. Again, I didn't think a 30+ running back was an option, and if it is/was, I'm not sure LJ was the right choice. I've heard arguments made that although LJ is going to be 31, he still he hasn't had a ton of carries in his career. To that I would respond that he's had 3 straight years of declining productivity and he hasn't had a lot of carries because he's gotten himself in a lot of trouble over the years. I've also heard the argument that LJ didn't have a good offensive line with KC last season and when given the chance in Cincy he played well. To that I would respond that Jamaal Charles rushed for nearly 1,000 yards and 6 yards per carry in the 8 games after LJ left. LJ averaged 2.9 ypc and had only 377 yards in 7 games with the same line.

Of the 5 30ish RB's in the free agent market (Taylor, Parker, Tomlinson & Jones,) LJ has had the fewest yards per carry (3.8) and appeared in the fewest games over the past 3 seasons. In fact, LJ's statistics pale in comparison to these guys...especially Thomas Jones. Thomas Jones has averaged nearly 1,400 yards and 10 TD's over the last 3 seasons while showing no signs of slowing down. Why not Thomas Jones?

I'm not ready to call this signing a disaster, it may turn out well? LJ has tried to find common ground with Skins fans by announcing that he is a lifelong fan. Evidently he grew up rooting for the Redskins and hating the Cowboys. That's cool, but in the process of describing his Skins loyalty, he ran the bus over one of the most beloved Skins of all-time. Tomorrow, I will post my Gary Clark autograph story.

Happy birthday Mark Moseley. Mark played 13 seasons for the Redskins from 1974-86. Mark was a 2 time Pro Bowler and in 1982 became the only kicker in the history of the NFL to be named MVP. Mark lead the NFL in 1983 with 161 pts and remains the Skins all-time leading scorer with 1,206 pts. The last of the straight on kickers and one of the last players with the single bar helmets…Mark should be in the NFL HOF. In retirement Mark became the director of franchising for the 5 Guys restaurant chain, I’m assuming that has rewarded him well. Happy 62nd Mr. Moseley.

Happy birthday Alvin Walton. Alvin played 6 seasons at safety for the Redskins from 1986-91. #40 appeared in 77 games with the Redskins, winning 2 Super Bowls. Alvin had 12 interceptions and countless tackles (no records) during his Redskins tenure…I remember him tackling Joe Morris about 100 times alone. In retirement Alvin played some more in the CFL and won a Grey Cup. He’s one of my favorites…happy 46th Mr. Walton.

Happy birthday Dan Wilkinson. “Big Daddy” played 5 seasons at D-tackle for the Redskins from 1998-2002. #95 appeared in 76 games collecting 23 sacks and 138 tackled during his tenure. His best season came in 99’ when he had 8 sacks and rambled 88 yards with an INT return for a TD. Dan retired after the 2006 season, his 12th in the NFL. Happy 37th Mr. Wilkinson.

Happy birthday Shawn Springs. Shawn played 5 seasons for the Redskins
from 2004-08. #24 appeared in 64 games at cornerback, intercepting 12
balls while returning 2 for TD’s. Shawn also had 7 sacks and 251 tackles
during his tenure. The Virginia native spent last season with the Patriots.
Happy 35th Mr. Springs.

Happy birthday Fred Stokes. Fred played 4 seasons at defensive end for the
Redskins from 1989-1992. Fred never missed a game during his Redskins
tenure, appearing in all 64 regular season contests. Fred had 20.5 sacks, 127
tackles (at least) and 9 fumble recoveries as a Redskin. #60 has a Super
Bowl ring from the 91’ season. In retirement Fred works as a motivational
speaker. Happy 46th Mr. Stokes.

3/9-14 Bullets/Wizards Bdays

Happy birthday Wes Unseld. Wes played 13 seasons for the Bullets from 1968-1981. Wes is in the HOF and was both ROY and MVP during his rookie season of 68’. #41 was a 5 time all-star who averaged 10.8 PPG and 14.0 RPG during his career. Besides being a tenacious rebounded who dominated players much taller than him, Wes was also an excellent passer and is the Bullets/Wizards all-time leader with 3,822 assists (double Gilbert.) In retirement Wes filled many roles for the Bullets/Wizards including coach and GM and spent 30+ years with the organization. Happy 64th Mr. Unseld.

Happy birthday Darrell Walker. Darrell played 4 seasons for the Bullets from 1987-90. Darrell was a point guard who wore #5. Darrell came to the Bullets (along with Mark Alarie,) from Denver in a trade for Michael Adams and Jay Vincent. Darrell appeared in 283 games as a Bullet, averaging 8.3 PPG, 6.5 RPG and 6.0 APG. His best season came in 89-90, when he nearly averaged a triple double 9.5 PPG, 8.8 RPG & 8.0 APG. In retirement Darrel worked in the Bullets front office and was briefly the head coach in 2000, going 15-23 during his brief tenure. Darrell is currently an assistant coach for the Pistons. Happy 49th Mr. Walker.

Happy birthday Kwame Brown. Kwame played 4 seasons as forward and center for the Wizards from 2001-2005. Kwame was the first high school player selected #1 overall, evidently because he played well in 1 on 1 games vs. Michael Jordan. Kwame proved to be a bust, as he averaged only 7.7 PPG and 5.5 RPG in his 253 games as a Wizard. His best season was 2003 when he averaged 10.9 & 7.4. The Wizards were able to salvage something from the KB experiment; they traded him in 2005 for Caron Butler. Kwame is still hanging on in the NBA, currently averaging 3.2 PPG for the Pistons. Happy 28th (yes he’s only 28) Mr. Brown.

Happy birthday Caron Butler. Caron was recently traded to the Mavericks, interrupting his 5th season with the Wizards. Caron had a great career with the Wizards, making 2 all-star teams while averaging 19.0 PPG, 6.6 RPG & 3.5 APG. The NBA recently banned Caron from chewing on his straws during games, something he’s done for years. It’s yet to affect his game, he’s averaging 17 pts and the Mavericks have won all 12 games he’s appeared in. Happy 30th Mr. Butler.

It was what every NFL agent and every NFL player anxiously awaited, the middle of the night phone call from Ashburn, VA asking...do you want to come over? The agent and player might put up a soft fight for a little bit, "I don't know it's late, you know I'm sorta seeing the Giants right now." But, they would be won over by the private plane rides and the wining, dining and ...the money!

But, all is quiet at Ashburn this year and Redskins fans don't quite know what to think. We, as fans, have been trained to expect the big name free agents to come to Redskins Park to not only visit, but to sign lucrative contracts that we can both praise and bitch about. This is the way things work, right? Not this year. Redskins One sits quietly at Dulles Airport and the pilots have had some unexpected time off. Agents are checking the batteries of their cell phones to make sure they are working properly, the free-agent tracker has nothing to track and Morton's business is way off compared to last year.

The booty calls have been reversed and now it's the agents calling and begging if their clients can come over. It's the Redskins saying "you can, but I'll tell you right now nothings going to happen." The Morton's steaks have been replaced with an intern placing an order at Chick Fil A. The private jet has been replaced by train and bus tickets. Terl's dropping Randle El off at Union Station, he can pick up Willie Parker at the same time.

Ok, I am embellishing the story a little bit. Of course the Redskins brass is still going to dine at Morton's or The Palm. But, by not making major changes so far in free agency, it proves that things have indeed majorly changed. It's a new day at Redskins Park...so far that has meant addition by subtraction. And so far, I'm happy with that. The only possible free agent I personally liked was Darren Sproles, who never made it to free agency (I think the Redskins may have made a move on him had he become available.) I can't shed any tears over the cuts the Redskins made, although I appreciate the time the players spent in burgundy and gold (except for Randle El.)

The Redskins still have major holes to fill and I expect they have a master plan on how to do that. It's obviously a slow developing plan and not an immediate results plan, which tells me that Dan Snyder is not calling these shots. Again, addition by subtraction. But, I did hear that Dan called Vinny the other night in the wee hours of the night, just for old time sake..."you wanna come over?"

Editors Note: While writing this post I realized I am so old that when I was a college aged kid making booty calls there were no cell phones, internet, email, texting or Skype. I had to do the 1 ring and hang up phone call technique, hoping that some chick would hear it and call me back. The moral of the story? Cal Ripken Jr...Skipper?

In a recent interview with Bloomberg Radio Cal Ripken expressed an interest in returning to the game as a major league manager. Ripken was quoted as saying, "I'm starting to think about it a little more now. When my boy goes off to college, if there's a time to come back to the game, maybe that's the time."

I'll be honest, I've never pictured my favorite athlete of all-time managing, despite the fact that he was born and bred to do it. I picture Cal as the G.M. or the owner of a MLB team, not an actual field coach...I see his brother Billy as a manager. And when we talk about Cal having any position with a MLB team, whether it be manager, G.M. or owner...it has to be with the Orioles...right? I can't see Cal becoming the manager of the Marlins or the Nats.

This is a make or break year for Dave Trembley, regardless of Cal's words. Anything less than .500 will probably lead to Trembley's dismissal. Would Andy Macphail be confident enough to hire Cal to be the manager? Cal would certainly demand more power than any other manager...ever. And how much money would it take? A S-load. And every crab eating O's fan out there is going to clamouring for Cal to be the next manager, any other choice and the B&O Warehouse will be receiving bomb threats.

For the record Cal's son Ryan is only a sophomore in high school, so by Cal's words we're talking about 2 years from now. But, with Cal being on record as saying he would like to manage...let the countdown begin.

Happy birthday Erik Bedard. Erik played 5 seasons for the Orioles from 2002-2007. Erik won 40 games and had a 3.83 ERA during his O’s tenure. Erik’s best season came in 07’ when he led the league in K’s and hits allowed per 9 innings while going 13-5 with a 3.16 ERA. Erik was traded to the Mariners after the 07’ season for Adam Jones, George Sherill, Chris Tillman and 2 others…thank you Andy Macphail. Erik will try to regain his form for the Mariners in 2010, he’s won 11 games in seasons for them. Happy 31st Mr. Bedard.

Happy birthday Jeffrey Hammonds. Jeffrey played 6 seasons for the Orioles from 1993-98. #11 played all 3 OF positions during his O’s tenure, appearing in 410 games while batting .264. Jeffrey’s best season came in 97’ when he clubbed 21HR’s and stole 15 bases. A 1st round draft pick, Jeffrey was traded to the Reds in 98’ for Willie Greene. Happy 39th Mr. Hammonds.

Happy birthday Brett Conway. Brett played parts of 5 seasons for the Redskins from 1998-2002. Brett appeared in 41 games during his Skins tenure making 75.4% of his FG attempts. His best season came in 99’ when he made 22 FG’s and 49 XP’s for 115 pts. In retirement Brett owns a fitness/dance studio in Chicago and also works in real estate. Happy 35th Mr. Conway.

Happy birthday Anthony Montgomery. Anthony recently completed his 4th season as a defensive tackle for the Redskins. #94 has appeared in 38 games collecting 78 tackles and 3 sacks. A restricted free agent, the Skins recently tendered Anthony with a 5th round $1.01 million offer for 2010. Happy 26th Mr. Montgomery.

RIP Perry Brooks

Former Redskin and friend Perry Brooks passed away yesterday, he was 55 years old.

Perry was a defensive tackle who played his college ball at Southern University and was drafted in the 7th round of the 1976 draft by the New England Patriots. Perry came to the Redskins in 1978 and remained with them until his retirement in 1984. Over 7 seasons Perry played in 92 regular season games and appeared in 2 Super Bowls, including the 82' Championship season.

In retirement, Perry got into the automobile business and was a long time employee of Cowles Nissan in Woodbridge, VA. It was here that I first met Perry. As a young 20ish kid who happened to be a diehard Redskins fan, I was thrilled to be working alongside a former Redskin. I would sit and listen to Perry's stories about those classic games and players that I had grown up admiring. I'm sure they were stories that Perry had grown tired of telling over the years, but he always welcomed me when I came to sit at his desk and ask him questions. Everything about Perry was big, his smile, his laugh, his personality and his heart. Perry not only shared his stories, Perry shared his personal Redskins tickets with me. I watched the last Redskins game played at RFK while sitting in Perry's seats. That was an experience I will never forget and I will never forget Perry.

Perry was very proud of his family, a family that includes his son Ahmad, a linebacker for the 49'ers. My thoughts and prayers go out to them...I guess heaven needed a defensive tackle to help stuff the run. RIP #69.

Chris Samuels: A Modern Day Hog

Chris Samuels will announce his retirement from the NFL tomorrow March 4 at Redskins Park, a neck injury forcing him out of the game after 10 seasons. Redskins fans should take pause and applaud a perennial Pro Bowler and great all around guy.

When you draft a Left Tackle #3 overall, the hope is that you can plug him in the lineup and forget about that position for the next decade or so. It certainly doesn't work out that way in most cases, but for the Redskins it did. In his first 8 seasons Samuels missed a total of 4 games. He battled ankle, knee, shoulder and neck injuries during that time but he kept showing up and playing at an extremely high level. Samuels was a 6 time Pro Bowler who appeared in 141 games as a Redskin, protecting the backs of 14 different QB's.

It isn't unreasonable to think that if he had stayed healthy Samuels may have played another 4-5 years and made another Pro Bowl or 2, which would have been a Hall Of Fame career. As it stands he was still one of the most dominant offensive lineman for a decade and may be a fringe HOF'er. He's certainly one of the all-time greatest offensive linemen that have worn the burgundy and gold (there have been many) and a "Hog" from a different era.

With the current state of the Skins offensive line, you will certainly come to miss Samuels if you don't already...I know I do. Congrats on a great career Mr. Samuels and best of luck in your retirement.

Happy birthday Phillip Daniels. Phillip was recently offered a contract to return to the Redskins for his 6th season in DC. Phillip has played 68 games as a Redskin, including all 16 last year despite playing most of the season with a torn bicep! It’s no surprise that he played thru the injury, he’s one strong badass. I’ll never forget his 4 sack performance against the Cowboys and he was born on my birthday! Phillip will be entering his 14th NFL season in 2010 and hopes to play another 4-5 years so he and his son can become the first father/son duo to play at the same time in NFL history. I wouldn’t bet against him. Happy 37th Mr. Daniels.

Happy birthday Stephen Davis. Stephen played 7 seasons for the Skins from 1996-2002. Stephen was a 2-time Pro Bowler who rushed for 5,790 yards (4th all-time) and 45 TD’s during his tenure. Stephen’s best season came in 99’ when he rushed for 1,405 yards and 17TD’s. Stephen signed a 1 day contract with the Panthers in 2008 so he could retire as a Panther instead of a Redskin…he played 3 seasons in Carolina. Happy 36th Mr. Davis.

Happy birthday Cory Raymer. Cory played 8 seasons for the Skins from 1995-2005. Cory appeared in 80 games as a Center/Guard. Cory was a 2nd round pick out of Wisconsin. Happy 37th Mr. Raymer.

Happy birthday Chris Webber. Chris played 4 seasons for the Bullets from 1994-98. Chris is one of my all-time favorite Bullets/Wizards. Chris averaged 21.4PPG and 9.3RPG during his Bullets tenure. Chris was an amazing passer and 3 pt shooter for a big man. In retirement Chris has worked in TV and just yesterday was sued for 3 million for a restaurant venture gone bad. Happy 37th Mr. Webber.

Don't look now but your Maryland Terrapins have the most important game in years coming up this Wednesday. The Terps will host Duke with a share of 1st place in the ACC on the line. Yep, a team picked by most to finish in the bottom half of the ACC has secured 2nd place and has a chance to tie for 1st with a win over Duke.

MD is coming off of a 104-100 victory over VT this weekend, the first road win vs Tech since they joined the ACC. Greivis pumped in 41 pts...anyone who shoots 43 times in a game should score 41, but it's still impressive. Greivis is writing the final chapters of his legacy at MD and quite frankly, a win over Duke and a run in the NCAA tournament may push him into top 3 all-time status.

I can't wait to see how this plays out and I know where I'll be at 9pm on Wednesday. Fear the Turtle.

Happy birthday Eddie Murray. “Ed-die, Ed-die,” played 13 seasons from 1977-88 and 1996. Eddie was a 3-time Gold Glove winner, 7-time All-Star and the 1977 ROY as an Oriole. Eddie is one of only 4 players in the history of MLB to have 500+ HR’s and 3,000+ hits (Aaron, Mays & Palmeiro.) Look, I can go on forever about Eddie’s accolades…quite simply he’s one of the greatest players to ever play for the Orioles or MLB for that matter. He’s also one of my favorite players of all time, you can check the back of my little league baseball card from 1985 if you want proof. Happy 54th Mr. Murray.

Happy birthday Steve Blake. Steve played 4 seasons for the Maryland Terps and 2 seasons for the Wizards from 2000-05. Steve was the first ACC player to ever compile 1,000 pts, 800 assist, 400 rebs and 200 stls in a career. Steve averaged 7.9 pts in the Terps 2002 NCAA Championship season. Steve’s #25 was retired by Maryland in 2003. Happy 30th Mr. Blake.

@ 4 Skins Draft...

Yes, I am stupid, I name the blog post "4 Skins," it was that are "Dirty 4's."

It's the time of the year to get lost in 40 yard dash times and mock drafts. The combine starts this weekend and the Redskins are, in the words of Bruce Allen, "moving Redskins Park to Indianapolis for the week." And although the Skins have a new regime in place, I'm still reading that the Skins are looking for the best available player...same plan Vinny had. Now, I'm not bashing anything yet...but picking the best "player" available is how we ended up with Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly and Fred Davis.

Most mock drafts have the Skins picking either Sam Bradford or Jimmy Clausen. I'm totally out on Bradford and lukewarm on Clausen. Truth be told, I probably could be sold on Clausen. If I were running the Redskins draft? I'd trade the pick down and pick up a lower 1st round pick and add an extra 2nd rounder. Use the 1st round pick to grab one of the 7 OT's projected to go in the 1st round, then you have 2 picks to spend on your choice of CB, QB or RB...quality players will be available. In fact, besides the depth at OT available in the first round, CB's are especially deep (a need position for the Skins.) And I'm not opposed to trying on a Tebow or Pike QB pick in the 2nd.

But, let's assume the Skins are going to draft a QB...here's my take on Sam and Jimmy.

Sam Bradford: He's coming off shoulder surgery and any shoulder surgery to the throwing arm of a NFL QB is MAJOR shoulder surgery. Bradford has proved to be injury prone in college, suffering concussions and breaking his wrist as well. Bradford needs to pack on major muscle to possibly withstand the rigors of being a NFL QB. Especially a QB who has no O-line, he can consult with Jason Campbell about that. Lastly, Sam has a problem with the Redskins name and I can understand that being that he is a Native American. There's no need to complicate that whole deal.

Jimmy Clausen: Clausen has all the tools and has played in a pro-style offense for the past 3 years under Charlie Weiss. Initially, I had a problem with a QB who lost 6 games his senior season at Notre Dame. But, Clausen threw 15TD's and had only 2 INT's in those 6 losses. He does need a new bathing suit.

Happy birthday John Shelby. “T-bone” was an OF who played 7 seasons for the Orioles from 1981-87. John was a 1st round pick who wore #37 (thirty-seven!) John was an excellent defensive player who batted .239-31-138 during his Orioles tenure. John was traded during the 87’ season to the Dodgers in exchange for Tom Niedenfuer. John was a 2-time World Series champion. In retirement John got into coaching and is currently the Orioles 1B coach. John also has a son who plays for the White Sox organization. Happy 52nd Mr. Shelby.

Happy birthday Bobby Bonilla. Bobby played 2 seasons for the Orioles from 1995-96. Bobby came to the Orioles in a trade with the Mets in exchange for Damon Buford and Alex Ochoa…a trade that proved to be a steal for the O’s. Bobby played OF-3B-DH for the Orioles and wore #26. Bobby hit .300-38-162 during his Oriole tenure. Bobby retired after the 2001 season as a 6-time All-Star. Happy 47th Mr. Bonilla.

Happy birthday Terry Allen. Terry played 4 seasons for the Redskins from 1995-98. #21 rushed for 4,086 yards during his tenure and was a Pro Bowler in 96‘. During that 96’ season Terry had 1,547 yards and 21TD’s…can you say fantasy stud? Terry is one the 70 Greatest Redskins. Happy 42nd Mr. Allen.

Janikowski Can Buy Lots Of Roofies

Sebastion Janikowski just inked up on the largest contract in the history of the NFL for a Kicker, worth $16 million over 4 years with $9 million guaranteed. So, we have a kicker with a history of drinking, getting arrested and who in 2 years may weigh close to 3 bills. What owner would sign such a player to such an unheard of some of money? The same guy who became the first owner in 20 years to draft a kicker in the 1st round and the same owner who last off-season awarded the largest contract in the history of the league to a punter. And that man, of course...is Al Davis (the Church Lady.) Oh well, it pays to be a special teamer in Oakland. And in Janikowski's defense he has played very well the past couple seasons. He also has a bad ass nickname, C-Bass. Congrats SJ, $14 million will buy a lot of potato Vodka.

Orioles...Magic?

I have all kinds of reasons to be excited and optimistic about the 2010 Orioles. The O's are loaded with young talent, they've added some key veterans and have moved their spring training home to within an hour drive or so from my house. Sure they haven't had a winning record in the last 12 years and I've dropped a $1,000.00 or more watching a 60-70 win team play on the MLB ticket during that time...but this is the time of year that I can be excited for my O's.

It's not unrealistic to think the Orioles have a chance to make a run at the wild card, just look at the 2008 Rays as an example. I know playing in the AL East makes it extremely difficult to break .500, let alone make the playoffs...but this O's squad has talent.

OK, maybe I'm talking out my ass about the playoffs, but take a look around the diamond with me concerning the talent.

C- Matt Wieters - Batted .288-9-43 last season. No reason to believe that he can't double those numbers this year. He'll be moving up in the lineup, playing a full season and he's only going to get better.

1B- Garret Atkins - No question Garret had a sub-par 2009 season, but Terry Crowley is known to get the best out of hitters. In the 3 previous seasons to 09' Atkins averaged .305-25-110. If he approaches those numbers in 2010, he'll be a steal for the O's.

2B- Brian Roberts - Everyone loves Brian for good reason, he's just a hard nosed, gritty and talented ballplayer entering his 10th season in an Oriole's uniform. You can book him to score 100 runs, steal 30+ bases and hit 50+ extra base hits.

SS- Cesar Izturis - Cesar is not going to put up big offensive #'s, but he does play solid defense and handles the bat well. Cesar struck out less than 10% of the time last season and if he can duplicate that again this year while stealing 15+ bases...I'll take it.

3B- Miguel Tejada - I'm happy to see Iggy back in an O's uniform. The power may be gone..hmmmm, I wonder why...but he's still a pure hitter. I expect Iggy to make the adjustment well to 3B and hit somewhere in the neighborhood of .300-15-80.

LF- Nolan Reimold - After years of stalling in the minors, Nolan got his chance last season and made the most out of it. I think his game fits well at Camden Yards and he reminds me of Bill Ripken...so I naturally love him. I'm still not sold completely.

CF- Adam Jones - Adam broke out in a big way last year, making his first All-Star team and showing all of his 5-tool abilities. Expect more this season. 30-30...I'm just sayin.

RF- Nick Markakis - My current favorite player, you can write it in cement that he hits .300-20-100 or better. I hope the beard is gone for spring training.

DH- Luke Scott - He may be the streakiest hitter I've ever seen. He can hit 5HR's one week, and not get 2 hits the next...just bat him in the middle of the lineup when he's hot.

OK, that's the good news...unfortunately you have to pitch in baseball, more on that later.

Happy birthday Darrell Green...Darrell turns 50 today. What can I say about this HOF player and person? A NFL record 20 seasons with 1 team, our team. I am totally convinced this guy could shutdown 75% of the WR's in the NFL, right now! At the age of 40 Darrell was still the fastest guy on the Redskins roster and he's been threatening on Twitter for months to run it again on his 50th...my money says he runs a sub 4.5. Happy 50th Mr. Green and thanks for the memories.

Happy birthday Patrick Ramsey. Patrick played 4 seasons for the Redskins from 2002-05. #11 appeared in 34 games at QB, going 10-14 as a starter. Patrick threw for 5,649 yards and 34 TD's during his Redskins tenure. Patrick was a 1st round draft pick out of Tulane, hand picked by Spurrier, Snyder or was it Cerrato? A lot of finger pointing on that one. Patrick is currently playing for the Lions. Happy 31st Mr. Ramsey.

Happy birthday Brig Owens. Brig played all 12 of his NFL seasons with the Redskins from 1966-77. #23 appeared in 158 games and intercepted 36 balls during his career. Brig is one of the 70 Greatest Redskins. In retirement Brig finished law school and went to work for the NFL Players Association. Happy 67th Mr. Owens.

Happy birthday Terry Crowley. Terry played 12 seasons for the Orioles from 1969-82. Terry has also served another 15 years as the Orioles batting coach. Terry batted .253 with 40 HR's and 194 RBI's during his O's tenure. The beauty of Terry's birthday is that it allows me to play Earl Weaver's Manager's Corner. Earl gives a better description of Terry than I ever could. Happy 63rd (he's looked 63 for 20 years) Mr. Crowley.

Happy birthday Raleigh McKenzie. Raleigh played 10 seasons for the Redskins from 1985-94. #63 played every position on the line but played most of his 144 games as a Redskin at center or guard. Raleigh is a 2-time Super Bowl Champion and one of the 70Greatest Redskins. In retirement this "Hog" became a teacher and high school football coach in Herndon, VA. Happy 47th Mr. McKenzie.

Happy birthday Joe Lavender. Joe played 7 seasons for the Redskins from 1976-82. Joe was a 2-time Pro-Bowler at cornerback for the Redskins. #20 appeared in 99 games and accumulated 29 INT's (5th all-time) during his Redskins tenure. Joe is a Super Bowl Champion. Happy 61st Mr. Lavender.

Happy birthday Juwan Howard. Juwan played 7 seasons for the Bullets/Wizards from 1994-01. Juwan was drafted #5 overall and wore #5 while playing Forward for the Wiz. Juwan averaged 18.4 PPG 7.4 RPG and 3.3 APG. Juwan was an All Star in 96' and was rewarded with a $105 million contract (after briefly signing with the Heat.) Juwan is currently playing for the Trailblazers, in his 16th NBA season. Happy 37th Mr. Howard.

Happy birthday Felix Pie. Felix is entering his second season as an Oriole, having finished the 2009 season strong. Felix looked lost at the plate early last year, but hard work with O's hitting coach Terry Crowley produced final #'s of .266-9-29. Felix also became only the 4th Oriole to hit for the cycle last season. Happy 25th Mr. Pie.

Happy birthday Lenny Webster. Lenny played 3 seasons for the Orioles from 1997-99. The former catcher was the last Oriole to wear #42 before the # was retired by MLB in honor of Jackie Robinson. Lenny batted .265-17-86 during his Orioles tenure. A native of New Orleans I'm assuming Lenny is pretty happy about the Saints right now. Happy 45th Mr. Webster.

Happy birthday Benny Ayala. Benny was a DH/OF who wore #27 and played 6 seasons for the Orioles from 1979-84. Benny batted .257 with 33 HR’s and 120 RBI’s during his O’s tenure and had a WS ring from the 83’ Champs. His best season came in 1980 when he went .265-10-33. In retirement Benny recently sold his WS ring, so I’m going to assume he’s not doing to well. Happy 59th Mr. Ayala.

Lorenzo Alexander's Charity Benefit

It didn't take me long to figure out that I was going to be a big fan of Lorenzo Alexander. The first time I saw him play he was running 15 yards down-field with no helmet on to tackle a running back...in an exhibition game! You can see the NFL.com video of that right here (complete with reaction from Gregg Williams.) I also enjoyed the commentary of the lady who filmed the play from the stands:

"Oh, but he still tackled him." "Why did he do that?"
Because he is a hard-nosed bad-ass football player...and yes he is bleeding.

And of course, the hits just keep on coming:

The guy plays offense, defense and special teams...I wish the Redskins had 53 Lorenzo Alexanders. Lorenzo has also become big in the community and has a charitable foundation named ACES. ACES currently has 4 charity events planned for 2010, 1 of which takes place this Thursday, February 11 at Jaxx in Springfield, VA from 6pm-10pm.

Ahhh Jaxx...takes me way back in time to a place where a single Fatpickle frequented this establishment, it was quite the spot back then (Jah Works is playing, that takes me back also.) A silent auction is scheduled to take place as well as appearances by celebrities and Redskins players.

So if you get a chance stop by and help a good guy help out a good cause.

Russ Grimm became the first (possibly last) member of the Hogs to gain entry into the HOF Saturday evening (click here for video.) I’ve been on record before about my feelings for Russ as a player and a coach, so here’s what some of his peers have to say about the 2010 Hall of Famer.

Chris Cooley (recounting a pre-game speech by Gibbs)

Don Warren

He was a hard-nosed player. He was a fierce, fierce competitor. He wouldn't let injuries knock him down at all. He was a guy that I saw get punched in the eye, get stitches, and get carted off the field. He had blood rolling down his face, had stitches, and within 10 minutes, you look in the huddle, and he's right back next to you. He's a fierce competitor, and just a tough guy."

Joe Bugel

"The Super Hog has been Russ Grimm," Bugel said on the day of his retirement. "He has ended up being a heck of a football coach, and I loved coaching him. He was allergic to the weight room, he was allergic to conditioning, but liked him because he had the ugliest body I've ever seen, and he was a good football player."

When you combine those 3 quotes you find a guy who didn’t look pretty playing, played hurt, played smart, played physical, was coachable and “had a pair.” When you form a core group of players like that…you win 3 Super Bowls. Congrats Russ.

Super Bowl XLIV: Pickin On The NFL

Who dat? Dat be the Super Bowl champions? No…really? For the past 2 weeks I’ve told anyone who asked for my opinion that the Colts would win the game. In fact, I told my co-workers this morning the Colts would win by 2 touchdowns. I mean…it’s hard not to believe that if Tony Dungy believes it. But, I guess I drank the Saint’s Kool-Aid for breakfast because I’m officially going on record as picking the Saints to win the game.

Picking the Saints definitely puts me in the minority as most of the experts are picking the Colts; even most of the celebrities are picking the Colts. But hey, I’m in good company…if the Saints are good enough for Phyllis Diller, they’re good enough for me! Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir (what’s that guy been smoking) even picks the same final score as I do…Saints 30 Colts 28. Who cares what the “experts” think with all their breaking down game film and well-informed information? I feel like I’m in good company with Phyllis and Bob.

It’s tough to pick against Peyton Manning, he may be the best I ever saw. The key to game will come early, with the Saints needing to do 1 of 2 things. The Saints need to come up with a couple of stops early, or if not, they need to answer the Colts scores. The Saints falling behind early would not be a good recipe for winning. Hopefully, Gregg Williams will bring a solid defensive game plan to the table and try to create some confusion for Manning…something that is not easy to do. I’m predicting a Joseph Addai fumble at some point in this game to swing things in the Saints favor.

So there you have it…put some Jambalaya in the crock pot, cue up ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’ and enjoy the game. Maybe I'll cruise on over to Orlando this week and see Drew Brees at Disneyworld.

Happy birthday Roberto Alomar. Roberto played 3 seasons at 2B for the Orioles from 1996-98. Robbie was a switch hitter who wore #12. During his O’s tenure Robbie batted .310 with 50HR’s and 210 RBI’s. Robbie made the All-Star team all the 3 years as an Oriole and won the Gold Glove twice. Robbie narrowly missed first ballot introduction to the Hall of Fame recently, missing by just 8 votes…I expect to see him voted in next year. In retirement Robbie has kept a fairly low profile besides the whole AIDS thing. I don’t know about that but the joke back in the day was Robbie spits and Brady swallows. Happy 42nd Mr. Alomar.

Happy birthday Fred Lynn. Fred played 4 season for the O’s from 1985-88. An center fielder who wore #19, Fred was known to sacrifice his body running into the outfield walls to make amazing catches. During his O’s tenure Fred batted .265 with 87 HR’s and 232 RBI’s. Fred was traded to the Tigers at the trading deadline in 88’ for Chris Hoiles. For his career Fred was a 9 time All-Star, won 4 Gold Gloves and was the first player to win the ROY and MVP awards in the same season. In retirement Fred has devoted much of his time to charity work. Happy 58th Mr. Lynn.

Happy birthday Melvin Mora. Melvin played 10 seasons for the Orioles from 2000-09. Melvin came to the Orioles in a trade with the Mets in exchange for Mike Bordick. Initially a utility player, Melvin settled into the 3B in 2004 and wound up appearing in more games there in an Orioles uniform…other than some Robinson guy. During his O’s tenure Melvin batted .280 with 158 HR’s and 662 RBI’s. Melvin’s best season came in 2004 when he batted .340-27-104. Melvin recently signed with the Colorado Rockies. Happy 38th Mr. Mora.

Happy birthday Scott Erickson. Scott played 7 seasons for the O’s from 1995-02. A tall(6’4”) righty who wore #19, Scott came to the Orioles in a trade with the Twins. During his O’s tenure Scott won 79 games and had a 4.73 ERA. His best season came in 97’ when he went 16-7 with a 3.69 ERA. Scott didn’t make any All-Star teams or win any Cy Young’s as an Oriole…but he was on People magazines most beautiful list of 2000. In retirement Scott married television reporter Lisa Guerrero and started a production company. Happy 42nd Mr. Erickson.

Music Monday: Better Than Ezra

I’ve chosen one my favorite all-time bands for today’s edition of “Music Monday,” Better Than Ezra. My first memories of BTE are from 1995 when I first heard ‘Good’ on WHFS. I remember driving in my car and horribly singing the lines “aha, it was good living with you, aha.” At the time BTE had already been making music for 7 years and they are still going strong today, after 22 years. ‘Good’ was the first and only #1 song for BTE (to date,) but the truth of the matter is, as “good” as ‘Good’ was…BTE has gotten better with age.

BTE has released 7 studio albums to date and in my opinion they started really hitting their stride with album #4 Closer. Don’t get me wrong BTE’s first 3 albums rocked, including the underrated How Does You’re Garden Grow? However, Closer is on a different level and it’s one of my desert island albums…it’s also an album that my 5 year old has been enjoying lately, we’re wearing out ‘Misunderstood.’

In addition to churning out great albums, BTE still tours regularly. They are a bad ass live band with their shows featuring various covers and medleys. My wife and I never miss a chance to see BTE. It’s no surprise that our 5 year old loves BTE…it was his first concert…when he was still in his mommy’s tummy.

The past couple weeks have been very good to BTE, they are natives of New Orleans and huge Saints fans…so they got that going for them, which is nice. In addition, Taylor Swift (a big BTE fan) performed a cover of their song ‘Breathless’ on the Hope For Haiti Now Telethon.

I recommend all of BTE’s music, but you can start your BTE collection by purchasing some of the tunes listed below. GO SAINTS!

PS- 15 years later I’m still singing “aha, it was good,” and I still sound horrible.

TV Tuesday: Friday Night Lights

My favorite TV show currently airing is Friday Night Lights (FNL.) A spin-off of the movie by the same name, FNL expands on the characters of the small rural town of Dillon, TX, where football is everything.

Peter Berg was the director of the movie and adapted it for the small screen. One of the things I dig about Peter is that he is a big Redskins fan. One of the shows main characters is a fullback that drinks a lot of beer, lives in a trailer and is named...Riggins. The name of Peter's production company that produces FNL is named 44Productions.

The writing and story lines in FNL are some of the best on TV today. The show is also blessed to have a group of great young actors who are given lots of freedom to ad-lib from the script. One particular actor, Zach Gilford, who plays Matt Saracen had one of the most amazing acting jobs I've seen on TV earlier this season. In an episode entitled "The Son," Matt deals with losing a father he never really knew...and struggles with how he should remember and honor a man he didn't like. Incredible job.

Other great young actors include Taylor Kitsch, Aimee Teegarden and Minka Kelly. The show has a lot of hot chicks pass thru it, which doesn't hurt it's standing with me. Coach Taylor is played by Kyle Chandler, when I hear some of his locker room speeches I want to go out and play.

FNL is currently running its 4th season on DirecTV. It will start airing on NBC in late April. I recommend you tune in to watch and get Seasons 1-3 on DVD to catch up.

Jan 18-19: Happy Bdays

Happy birthday Brady Anderson. Brady played 14 seasons with the Orioles from 1988-2001. An outfielder who wore #9 (and long sideburns,) Brady ranks among the Orioles top ten all-time in nearly every offensive category and appeared in 3 All Star games. Brady came to the Orioles along with Curt Schilling in a trade for Mike Boddicker. Who can forget his 1996 season when he hit 50 bombs? That season he also had 92 extra base hits, drove in 110 and slugged .637! Brady was inducted to the Orioles HOF in 2004 by Cal Ripken, who has called him his “best friend” and “the greatest lead off hitter in Orioles baseball and the best athlete I ever played with.” Brady is still one of only 2 players (Bonds) to both hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a season. Brady was also the first player in American League history to hit 20 home runs, steal 50 bases and drive in 75 in the same season (1992.) In retirement Brady has become a co-owner in the ABA, had a baby with a Hungarian model and sexted his abs to a chick who worked for TMZ. Happy 46th Mr. Anderson.

Happy birthday Scott McGregor. Scott played his entire 13 season career for the Orioles from 1976-1988. A crafty lefthander who wore #16, Scott won 138 career games, ranking 6th on the O’s all-time list. Scott’s best season came in 1980 when he won 20 games and had a 3.18 ERA. Scott was a great post season pitcher, compiling a 1.63 ERA in 6 starts, including a shutout to clinch the 83’ World Series against the Phillies. Scott retired after the 88’ season with a 3.99 career ERA and 82 complete games. In retirement Scott got into coaching and is currently the pitching coach for the Orioles single A Aberdeen Ironbirds. Happy birthday Rick Krivda. Rick played parts of 3 seasons with the Orioles from 1995-97. Another lefty pitcher who wore #38, Rick had a career record of 9-14 as an Oriole. Rick was a member of the 2000 US Olympic baseball team that won a gold medal. Rick is the only Oriole pitcher that I can claim I got a hit off of. I went 2-3 against him at Cal Ripken’s Fantasy Camp a few years back. In retirement Rick is a General Manager for Extra Innings in Baltimore. Happy 40th Mr. Krivda.

Happy birthday Randy Thomas. Randy just completed his 7th season as a Redskin, a season cut short by a torn triceps. Randy has played well (when healthy) at RG over those 7 seasons. He was signed as a free agent from the Jets back when the Redskins purged the Jets roster in the offseason of 2002-03. Randy has appeared in 82 games for the Redskins during his tenure. Known as a great cook and big eater, Randy knows his way around a grill/kitchen. He also owns a restaurant named RT’s and has taken on professionals in eating contests. Happy 34th Mr. Thomas.

Happy birthday Tony McGee. Tony played 3 seasons for the Redskins from 1982-84’. A defensive end who wore #78, Tony had 21 sacks in his 3 seasons. Tony appeared in 41 games and appeared in 2 Super Bowls, winning 1. For his career Tony played 14 seasons and played 202 games. In retirement Tony has hosted the “Tony McGee Show” and is also an enforcer for the “uniform police.” Happy 61st Mr. McGee

Happy birthday Reggie Brooks. Reggie played 3 seasons for the Redskins from 1993-95. A running back who wore #40, Reggie appeared in 29 games. Reggie was drafted in the 2nd round out of Notre Dame, where he was an All-American. His best season was his rookie campaign in 93’ when he rushed for 1,063 yards and had 1,261 yards from scrimmage. Reggie had a fumbling problem and he quickly got in the dog house after 93’, dropping to 297 yards in his 2nd season then -2 yards in his 3rd. Happy 39th Mr. Brooks.

Happy birthday Derek Smith. Derek played 4 seasons for the Redskins from 1997-2000. Derek wore #50 and was a 3rd round pick out of Arizona State, where he was teammates and friends with Pat Tillman and Jake Plummer. Derek did not miss a game in those 4 seasons, appearing in 64 games at OLB and MLB. Derek amassed 372 tackles, 5 fumble recoveries, 1 INT and 4.5 sacks during his tenure. Derek has not officially retired and has now played 12 seasons in the NFL. Happy 35th Mr. Smith.

Happy birthday Michael Adams. Michael played 4 seasons for the Bullets from 1986-87 & 1991-94. Michael played PG and wore #10. Michael appeared in 281 games for the Bullets, averaging 13.3ppg and 6.6apg. His best season came in his all-star 1991-92 season when he averaged 18.1ppg and 7.6apg. For his career Michael led the league in 3 point attempts 4 times. In retirement Michael got into coaching and is currently an assistant at Maryland. Happy 47th Mr. Adams.

Happy birthday Javale McGee. Javale is playing his 2nd season for the Wizards. A center who wears #34, Javale was a 1st round pick last year out of Nevada. Javale has struggled this season as the rest of the Wizards have. For his career Javale has appeared in 97 games, averaging 5.6ppg and 3.4rpg. Happy 22nd Javale.

For today’s “Film Friday,” brought to you on this fine Saturday, the spotlight is on the movie I named the 4th best comedy of all-time…Tommy Boy.
Easily the best movie of Chris Farley’s short career, Tommy Boy is the kind of movie you talk about with co-workers and the lines from the movie just start flowing. A few (of many) best lines:

“Housekeeping, you want mint for your pillow”

“Did you eat a lot of paint chips when you were a kid?”

“Richard, who’s your favorite little rascal? Alfalfa…or is it SPANKY?

Farley left us far too early, having appeared in only 10 movies (4 as the lead) at the time of his death. Black Sheep, Beverly Hills Ninja and Almost Heroes had their moments, but never came close to the pure gold that was Tommy Boy. His supporting roles in Billy Madison and Dirty Work produced some memorable scenes as well. It’s hard to believe that Chris has been dead going on 13 years. I'm in the majority of people that would like to see Indy fall on their faces. Not because they rested their players, I don't have a problem with that and I don't think it's going to affect their play. I didn't like the fact that they threw the ball 5 or 6 straight times to Dallas Clark and Reggie Wayne, just so each could get to 100 receptions on the year. Now you're saying W's don't matter but stats do. Don't like it. Anyway, none of that matters now...the Colts will win, on a FG by longtime Raven Matt Stover.

Happy birthday Fred Davis. “Sleepy” or “boozie” just finished his 2nd season as a Redskin. Fred stepped up after Cooley went on IR and finished the season with 48receptions and 6 TD’s. Fred showed improvement in his blocking and ability to gain extra YAC. Fred was the 2007 Mackey Award winner as the nation’s top tight end while at USC, where he was originally recruited to play WR…might explain that YAC stuff. It would appear that the Redskins have a serious offensive weapon if they can utilize Cooley and Fred at the same time…I look forward to seeing that. Happy 24th Mr. Davis.

Happy birthday Stephon Heyer. Stephon just wrapped up his 3rd season as an offensive tackle with the Redskins. Stephon started all 16 games and has appeared in 37 games during his career. Stephon came to the Redskins from Maryland as an undrafted free agent. While at Maryland Stephon appeared in 50 games. Happy 26th Mr. Heyer.

Happy birthday Shawn Barber. Shawn played 4 seasons at outside linebacker for the Redskins from 1998-2001, he wore #59. Shawn came to the Redskins as a 4th round pick out of Richmond University. Shawn appeared in 49 games as a Redskin, accumulating 281tackles, 3 INT’s and 3 sacks. His best season came in 99’ when he appeared in all 16 games for the NFC East Champions and had 148 tackles. Shawn retired after the 2007 season, his 10th in the NFL. In retirement Shawn got into coaching and is the running backs coach at Baker University. Happy 35th Mr. Barber.

Happy birthday Delino Deshields. Delino wore #11 and played 3 seasons for the Orioles from 1999-01. Primarily a second baseman, Delino also played some OF for the Orioles and appeared in 305 games during his O’s tenure, batting .269. Delino’s best season as an Oriole came in 00’ when he batted .296-10-86 and stole 37 (thirty-seven!) bases. Delino retired in 2002 after 13 seasons and 1,548 hits and 463 stolen bases. In retirement Delino founded the Urban Baseball League (with Oil Can Boyd) and got into coaching. In 2009 he was the hitting coach for the Billings Mustangs in the Reds organization. Delino also has a son (Delino Jr.) who is a nationally recruited RB out of Georgia. Happy 41st Mr. Deshields.

Happy birthday Don Maclean. Don wore #34 adn played 3 seasons at forward with the Bullets from 92-95. Don came to the Bullets in exchange for John “Hot Plate” Williams. While at UCLA, Don broke Kareem Abdul Jabbar’s record for career points. As a Bullet Don appeared in 176 games, averaging 12.5ppg and 4.3rpg. His best season came in 93-93 when he averaged 18.2ppg and 6.2rpg and was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player. Don was traded to the Nuggets in 95’ in exchange for Robert Pack. Don retired after the 2000-01 season, a season in which he tested positive for steroids. This led to the famous Charles Barkley quote “I’ve seen Don Maclean naked, he ain’t on steroids.” In retirement Don is an analyst for UCLA basketball games. Happy 40th Mr. Maclean.

There is one sure fire way to know if Jerry Gray officially interviewed to be the head coach of the Redskins…did he spend the night at Dan Snyder’s mansion? Seriously, WTF is up with the sleepover interviews at the Danny’s? What other job in the world do you not only wear a suit to the interview but you also bring your pajamas? I’m not making this up…it’s well documented.

So this has to make one wonder…what goes on in that 24 hour period at Danny’s house? Luckily, I was a fly on the wall during the Shanahan interview and I’m here to report my findings. Here’s a timeline breakdown of what went down.

5pm-6pm The Interview

What interview? Shanahan was hired months ago. So…Dan, Shanny and the man Shanny HIRED…Bruce Allen, spend this time playing the hand slap game, paper/rock/scissors and Call of Duty.

6pm-7pm Dinner

The boys have worked up quite the hunger from all the games so Dan and Shanny dispatch Bruce to get some Johnnie Rockets burgers.

7pm-9pm Film Breakdown

It’s time to start evaluating talent, so Bruce, Dan and Shanny sit down to watch highlights of last years Golden Globes and Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year. Bruce and Shanny butt heads over the use of Ryan Seacrest, Bruce wants more while Shanny wants less. Dan tells Bruce that Shanny has final say…Seacrest OUT!

10pm-11pm Special Guests

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes stop by for a visit. Bruce was a big fan of Dawson’s Creek, so Katie entertains him by acting out old scenes. Tom, Dan and Shanny retreat to the basement for some clay table processing. Kenny Loggins stops by just to sing “Highway to the Danger Zone” for effect.

12am-1am Racquetball

Needing a 4th for a mini round robin tournament, Dan calls “consultant” Vinny Cerrato over to play. So…Vinny walks over to the main house from his apartment over Dan’s garage. Before match play begins Vinny dispenses the one and only piece of valuable “consulting” information he has learned in 10 years on the job…let the boss win.

1am-2am Massage

After calling several classified adds in the City Paper Bruce finds a couple of nice medical students (a blonde and an Italian) to come over and give Dan and Shanny well deserved massages. Bruce advises them to ask for the full service.

2am-4am Bonding

Bruce and Vinny have retreated to the garage apartment and it’s time for the new BFF’s to bond. Shanny originally wanted to go to bed but Dan reminded him that Gibbs worked till 4am. Shanny was pissed so he tea-bagged Danny’s drum set…but the spat was over quickly and the 2 bonded by playing truth or dare, ran a sack race and built a pillow fort. Dan also helped Shanny set up his FaceBook profile. Another spat ended the night when Dan overruled Shanahan again…Dan always gets the top bunk.

4am-8am Sleep/Brainwashing

Shanahan tossed and turned with a case of the Johnny Rockets farts. Dan spent this time brainwashing Shanny into never reading page 14 of his contract (aka the Lavar page,) and always falling in love with every “sexy” pick the Danny likes. He also convinced Shanahan to think he has “total control” even though he never really will.

8am-9am Golf Cart Ride

Bright and early Dan took Shanny on a golf cart ride around the estate. Shanny tried to explain football terminology to Dan but spent 30 minutes going over “trips” and “traps.” Dan drove down to the river to say hello to Bruce and Vinny who were busy cutting down nuisance trees.

9am-11am Cartoons!

Another fight …over the remote control this time. Danny likes old school “Tom & Jerry” and “Thundercats,” while Shanny is more of a “Phineas and Ferb” guy.

11am-12pm Extreme Makeover

Dan’s stylist comes in to hook Shanny up for his big press conference. This process involves only one thing…which of these 1,000 burgundy and gold ties would you like to wear Mr. Shanahan?

12pm-2pm The New Digs

Helicopter ride over to Ashburn where Shanny settles into his new office. The office looks more like a prison wall from where Zorn has been counting down the days using hash marks. Jerry Gray had been “squatting” in the office for several days. While being removed he was heard muttering “they said they would get back to me.”

2pm Ladies & Gentlemen…You’re New Coach

My Redskins Predictions = FAIL

Way back on September 7th, 2009 I wrote a post about my predictions for the upcoming Redskins season. Looking back I have to ask myself one question "what are you smoking?" I did make the comment that I shouldn't post the predictions because I'm very superstitious and by posting them I'm probably going to screw them all up...I should have listened to myself. Here's a look back at the disaster that was "Fatpickle's Fearless Redskins Predictions."

The Redskins will go 10-6 and make the playoffs. This will require a NFC East road win and a west coast road win to do so.

False- They got that west coast road win against the Raiders…unfortunately they didn’t win a NFC East road game…or a home one!

Brian Orakpo will be the NFL Defensive ROY.

False- However, he was an impact player and you could have made the argument that he should have won it.

Andre Woodson will be released from the practice squad by the end of week 4.

False- He made it until late November, but he was still released.

Jeff Garcia will be signed to the active roster.

False- This was a long shot, the Eagles did sign him for a couple weeks.

After a couple of big TD’s early in the season, Malcolm Kelly will get injured and miss the last 8-10 games.

False- he stayed healthy and still hasn’t scored a NFL touchdown.

Devin Thomas will have little impact in the passing game (maybe some on special teams.)

True- Overall he had little impact at WR and showed some promise on kick returns.

Marko Mitchell will catch 30+ balls.

False- I was high on Marko coming out of the pre-season, he didn’t see much action and caught 4 balls.

London Fletcher will make his first Pro Bowl.

False- He played well enough, but got the shaft again.

Carlos Rogers will match or exceed his career total of 5 INT’s this season. He will leave after the season via free agency.

False- The 2nd half could still hopefully come true, as I hope that it will…he caught ZERO interceptions.

Fred Davis will have 1 game this season where he goes off…he’ll then disappear and probably catch fewer passes than Yoder.

False- Fred Davis played well and went off a few times after Cooley went on IR. Props to Yoder for 3 TD’s.

Marcus Mason will see more and more playing time as the year goes on… and he’ll finish with over 250 yards rushing.

True and False- He did see more and more action but finished with only 127 yds rushing.

Clinton Portis will rush for 1000-1200 yards in his last season for the Redskins.

False- If Portis would have stayed healthy he would have found his way to 1,000+ and if my aunt had nuts she’d be my uncle. His return is up in the air.

Also the last season in a Redskin’s uniform for Smoot, Wynn, Griffin, Collins, Betts, Albright, Thomas and Randle El.

TBD- I would welcome back Griffin and Albright.

Zorn will survive this season and be back for 2010.

Negative Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.

I will drink many beers, jump up and down, yell and scream, throw things and possibly shed tears this season (happy ones.)

True- But this was a given.

Jan 11-13: Happy Birthdays

Happy birthday Terence Morris. Terence played 4 seasons as a power forward for the Maryland Terrapins from 1997-2001. Terence wore #44 and appeared in 136 games averaging 12.7 ppg and 6.8rpg for his career. His best season came in 99-00’ when he averaged 15.8ppg & 8.6rpg. Terence ranks among the Terps top 10 all-time in points, rebounds, games and 3 pointers made. Terence played 3 seasons in the NBA before moving his game overseas where he still plays. Happy 31st Mr. Morris.

Happy birthday Chris Ray. Chris played 4 seasons as a relief pitcher for the Orioles from 2005-2009 (he missed all of 2008 due to Tommy John surgery.) Chris was a 3rd round draft choice out of the College of William and Mary and wore #37 (thirty-seven!) as an Oriole. His best season came in 2006 when he was 4-4 with 33 saves and a 2.73 ERA. Chris struggled in 2007 before blowing out his elbow and to this date has never been the same. He was traded this off-season for Kevin Millwood, a great trade for the Orioles. Happy 28th Mr. Ray.

Happy birthday Tim Hulett. Tim played 6 seasons with the Orioles from 1989-94. Tim was a utility infielder who wore #36 and appeared in 343 games with the Orioles. Tim was the 3rd overall pick in the 1980 draft. His best season came in 93’ when he batted .300-2-23. In retirement Tim has coached the Evangel Eagles high school baseball team to 2 state titles. Happy 30th Mr. Hulett.

Happy birthday Pete Cronan. Pete played 5 seasons for the Redskins from 1981-85. Pete was a linebacker who wore #54. Pete was a special teams standout and was singled out by Joe Gibbs in his Hall of Fame speech. Pete appeared in 40 games as a Redskin and has a Super Bowl ring from the 82’ win. In retirement Pete has done color commentary for Boston College (his alma mater) football games since 1988’. Happy 55th Mr. Cronan.

Music Monday: Elvis

In honor of what would have been his 75th birthday last week, today's "Music Monday" features one of my favorite people of all-time...Elvis Presley. Long after his death, Elvis is still one of the coolest people on the planet.

There's not a lot that I could tell you about Elvis that you haven't heard before. We all know he's the King of Rock and Roll, had about 100 #1 hits and made a lot of crappy movies...crappy movies that are still good. If you're an Elvis fan you may also get the question, do you like young Elvis or fat Elvis better? I love the music from both...but I like the fat Elvis best, he was an original bad ass.

Fat Elvis ate whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted (I have his cookbook, you can have a heart attack looking at it.) Elvis could order up 2 peanut butter, bacon & banana sandwiches with a side of Miss Tennessee. Before Elvis "possies" didn't exist and without Elvis there would be no MTV Cribs...he still has the 2nd most famous and most visited house in the US.

Film Friday: Beautiful Girls

For my first Film Friday post I am choosing a somewhat obscure movie from 1996, “Beautiful Girls.” If you haven’t seen the movie don’t be afraid by the title…this isn’t no chick flick, it’s a guy movie all the way.

The movie centers around a group of friends re-connecting for their 1st high school reunion. The main character, Willie (Timothy Hutton) is a bar-room piano player living in New York City who returns to his small northern hometown to find out how everything is the same…yet everything is different. The dialogue between Willie and his school buddies is what makes the movie great. Michael Rapaport gives his best performance in this film and Matt Dillon is awesome as well. The scene in the diner with the engagement ring is pure gold. This movie introduced us to Natalie Portman and the movie is so good Rosie O’Donnell is funny. Uma Thurman is super hot in her role as the perfect girl...right below is a great scene when Uma meets the guys.

If you haven’t seen this movie, put it at the top of your Netflix list, go to OnDemand or Redbox or whatever you need to do to watch this movie. The soundtrack is also great, featuring one of my favorite Pete Droge tunes.

2009 Redskins D/ST Report Cards

Defensive Line – B-

The Skins ranked 16th in the NFL against the run…so that’s an ok job. 34 sacks by D-lineman (including Orakpo,) is a far better job than any in recent memory. Whether or not Haynesworth is a bust is up for debate…I say they got exactly what paid for. Haynesworth’s career averages in the 7 seasons prior to this year were 49 tackles and 3.5 sacks…while playing approx. 50% of the snaps. He gave the Redskins 37 tackles and 4 sacks and played approx. 50% of the snaps. I thought Haynesworth played well and is definitely a difference maker. Will the next D-coordinator let him make more plays? And if the next D-coordinator runs a 3-4 defense, how will Haynesworth fit in? Golston and Griffin had decent years. Carter had a career year and deserves credit for playing the last couple games with a torn bicep. Phillip Daniels also deserves credit for playing hurt. Whether Orakpo is a DE or a LB…he’s a badass. I heart Lorenzo Alexander.

Linebacker - B

London Fletcher was jobbed of a Pro Bowl appearance again. He is the rock of the defense and had 142 tackles. Rocky McIntosh had his best year as a Redskin. Orakpo had 11 sacks. Depth is an issue.

Cornerback - C

The Skins ranked 9th overall against the pass, a number I believe to be misleading. The Redskins ranked near the bottom of the NFL with only 11 interceptions. Rogers had zero interceptions and lost his starting job. Hall played o.k., but is not the elite shutdown corner that we paid for. Smoot is declining, if not done. Not sold on Tryon and Barnes couldn’t find his way onto the field. Help wanted.

Safety - C-

I heart Reed Doughty overall, but he struggles in pass coverage…which is better than Landry who just struggles. Horton lost his starting job before an injury ended his season.

Special Teams - C-

The kicking game (Suisham) cost the Redskins 2 wins. Hunter Smith made a couple trick plays work, but his punting was below average and he missed several games with a leg injury. Rock Cartwright is no longer any good at the one thing he was good at…which doesn’t bode well for his future. Thomas may be ok as a kick returner. Randle El is the worst punt returner I have ever seen in my 30 years as a fan of the Redskins. Once again, I heart Lorenzo Alexander. One final thing…swing gate.

Random Thought Thursday: I'm A Man...

...and as a man I am generally thinking about 1 of 3 subjects...beef, beer or breasts. Sometimes, I think about all 3 at the same time. So here's a "couple" quick thoughts on each.

BEEF
I want to pass along my meat marinade. I use this marinade whenever I'm thinking about throwing some tasty steaks on the grill.

Fatpickle's Famous Marinade
(Step 1: Open a beer and drink)

1.5 cups of steak sauce (I like to combine A1, Worcester Sauce, Pickapeppa Sauce and Smith & Wollensky Sauce)

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1/3 cup Italian dressing or olive oil

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/3 cup of honey or maple syrup

Combine all the ingredients and mix well. Pour over 2 of your favorite cuts of meat (in a Ziploc bag) and let sit for 2-3 hours in the fridge. Grab another beer. Turn the meat every half hour to coat all sides. Grab more beer as you go.

Grill over medium heat until steak is cooked to your desired taste (I prefer medium rare.) Enjoy with another beer.

In case you don't know...I like beer. My beer of choice in bulk is Bud Light, but I also enjoy sampling dark beers to taste. Here's a website about beer.

Redskins Set To Introduce Shanahan

It's January, the most exciting time of the year to be a Redskins fan...too bad none of the excitement takes place on the football field. The Redskins are set to introduce Mike Shanahan (forever to be known here at Fatpickled as "Old Wooden Teeth," at a 2pm press conference as the new head coach and Executive VP (Vinny's old title.) The reports say that Shanahan will have full control of all football decisions. I believe that to be true in the case of Bruce Allen, who was accentually hired by Shanahan...but in Snyder's case I'm not so sure. We also have a war of words between Jason Campbell and Clinton Portis over leadership and work ethic. Never a dull moment in January...wait till free agency opens! Jan 5-6: Happy Birthdays

Happy birthday Gilbert Arenas. Gilbert is playing (hopefully) his 7th season as a Washington Wizard. He is, and has been, my favorite basketball player during that time. Of course my favorite basketball player pulls a gun on his teammate and may find himself suspended for the season, or released outright from his contract…of course this happens with my favorite player. Gilbert needs more than my birthday wishes this year…he needs a good lawyer. Happy 28th Mr. Arenas.

Happy birthday Ryan Minor. Ryan played 3 season for the Orioles from 1998-00. Ryan will forever be known as the man who finally replaced Cal Ripken in the starting lineup for the Orioles. On 9/20/1998 Ryan started at 3B while Cal sat on the bench for the first time in 2,632 games. Ironically, Ryan (the 3B of the future) would play his last game in the majors on Oct. 7, 2001...1 day after Cal’s last game. Ryan’s career was forgettable, he hit only .177 over 142 career games. Ryan was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1996 NBA draft, maybe he chose the wrong sport. In retirement, Ryan got into coaching and is currently the hitting coach for the O’s Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds. Happy 36th Mr. Minor.

TV Tuesday: Seinfeld

For the first ever TV Tuesday I think it’s a no-brainer to just go ahead and get Seinfeld out of the way. On many critics list as the greatest show of all-time “yada, yada, yada” the show about nothing was must-see TV back on Thursday nights in the 90’s. The Seinfeld cast recently had a reunion on Curb Your Enthusiasm; I somehow forgot to tune in. I know Curb is supposed to be a funny show, but in the couple times I’ve watched it I just couldn’t get into it.

Seinfeld will go down as one of my all-time favorites TV shows. Kramer was my favorite character, followed closely by George. Elaine and Jerry were funny together and Puddy was awesome. By the way…you can see Puddy playing basically the same character on Rules Of Engagement (a surprisingly decent show.) I could do without Newman. Jerry and George’s parents were awesome and I particularly enjoyed the shows that featured the retirement community in Florida (Kramer running for president, Jerry working out vs. Lloyd Bridges.)

I ultimately believe that Seinfeld ended a couple seasons too soon, the show was in the zone and funnier than ever when it ended its run in 1998. Now, we have reruns available nearly 24 hours a day, so we can relieve all the great memories including the following classics:

“The Soup Nazi”
“The Maestro”
“The Chicken Roaster”
“The Implant”
“The Hamptons”

This is a re-post to an article I originally wrote back in October of 2008. Best of luck Buges, you will be missed.

I would like to pay my respects to the greatest NFL position coach of all-time, Joe Bugle. For 31 NFL seasons, Buges has been the mark that all other coaches should be measured by. Whether you are a hall of fame coach, or a rookie coach, you know you'll be better with Buges on your staff.

Buges has been around so long that he coached Romeo Crennel at Western Kentucky 40 years ago! During this time, Buges roomed with a grad assistant by the name of Jerry Glanville in a one bed apartment! After a coin flip, Buges won the bed, forcing Glanville to the floor to sleep on newspapers! I'm laughing at the thought of Jerry sleeping on papers, and leaving Elvis tickets at the W. KTY ticket gate. Buges and Jerry lived off pizza and donuts during this time (who doesn't) because they had no $$ and had a couple players who worked at the pizza and donut shop. Many nights Buges and Jerry would stay up late drawing up plays on one of the pizza boxes. Maybe 50 gut was a specialty pizza!

Did you know that Buges was the O-line coach for Bum Phillip's Oilers in the late 70's? No wonder Earl Campbell had those big holes to run thru! The Oilers defeated the Chargers in the 79 playoffs, a Chargers team who had an O-coordinator by the name of Joe Gibbs.
In 1981 Gibbs and Buges joined forces with the Skins. Soon after, The Hogs were born. Buges took guys that were old, undrafted, and undersized, and made them the meanest, baddest, mfer's in the league.

When Gibbs came back, the only way it would have felt right was with Buges. We got Buges, and we should never let go. I was worried that Buges would ride off into the sunset with Joe, but we are lucky that he stuck around. Zorn is lucky that he has a guy like Buges to lean on. Buges coaches up the young guys, and stands behind the veterans. He is our rock.

So, for the man that was born 68 years ago in Pittsburgh, PA, lets knock this Steeler's team in the mouth! Let's make them bleed! Because I know if Joe could strap on the pads, someone would be bleeding.

2009 Redskins Offensive Report Card

Quarterback - C

Here lies the problem I have with Jason Campbell, he’s just an all-around solid C. JC had decent numbers overall; 86.4 QB Rating with 3,618 yards passing, 20 passing TD’s and 15 INT’s. However, those numbers plunged to a 65.6 QB rating with 6 TD’s 8 INTS vs. the NFC East. After 52 career NFL starts JC’s record is 20-32. Love the guy, can’t say bad things about him…but the record speaks for itself.

Running Back - D

Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts went on IR and were lost for the year…neither played well when healthy. Ganther, Cartwright and Mason are not NFL caliber backs. Mike Sellers had a very sub-par year. This position has serious issues that need to be addressed.

Offensive Line - D-

Dockery and Rabach were ok…besides that everyone is old, hurt or sucks…or all 3 combined. A young lineman has to be drafted and a couple more added via free-agency.

Wide Receiver - C-

Santana Moss is far and way the best WR we have…and he’s not an elite receiver. Randle El was terrible…and if you think Kelly and Thomas made strides this year…your nuts. They combined for 50 receptions for 672 yards and 3 TD’s. Eagle’s rookie Jeremy Maclin caught 55-762-4.

Tight End - B

Chris Cooley was on his way to another Pro Bowl season before breaking his ankle. Fred Davis stepped into the starting role and performed well…in fact he seemed to get better and better. Yoder is the master of the 2 yard TD and an awesome blocker, even filling in admirably for an injured Mike Sellers. This is the deepest position on the Redskin’s roster.

Music Monday: Pete Yorn

For my first “Music Monday” post I’m choosing one of my favorite (if not my favorite) singers, Pete Yorn. Pete’s 1st album, Music For The Morning After (MFTMA) is one of the albums I need to have if I’m ever stranded on a desert island.

MFTMA was Pete’s debut album. He first arrived on the scene when he scored the movie Me, Myself & Irene. 2 songs from MFTMA were featured in the movie. Pete now has 5 studio albums plus live recordings and songs that were featured on various soundtracks. I had the opportunity to see Pete at a bar in St. Pete, Florida a couple months ago. It was awesome seeing a guy who has 1.2 million fans on Twitter, in a bar that holds only 400 people. Pete put on a bad ass show and now my wife who knew very little of him is now a huge fan.

I recommend all of Pete’s stuff, however if you don’t know his music and want to invest $5 or $10 to download some tunes, I recommend:

A New Look Fatpickled In 2010

I'm excited to announce a few changes that will be happening on the site in 2010. When I first started this blog the idea was that I would write not just about sports, but also movies, music and other pop culture stuff. Well, Fatpickled somehow got away from all of the other stuff and became an all-sports blog. I'm here to say today that Fatpickled will now be touching on all the other stuff as well.

Don't get too confused, this site's main focus will still be sports...specifically the teams I love (Redskins, O's, Terps, Wizards.) However, in addition to several weekly post about sports, you will also receive a daily dose of pop culture. Here's what you can expect to see in 2010:

Music Monday - Every Monday I will write about a song, an album or a specific musical act that I love. I absolutely love music, and my tastes range all across the board...I once bought Everclear, Culture Club and Conway Twitty CD's in a single trip to Best Buy. I'm always looking for new music, so hopefully you guys will share your musical likes with me as well.

TV Tuesday - Every Tuesday I will write about TV Shows from today and the past that I have enjoyed. This may include talking about my favorite current show (Friday Night Lights,) or my favorite shows as a kid (Three's Company, Dukes Of Hazzard.) I plan on showing clips from Hulu and YouTube.

Whatchoo Talkin Bout Wednesday or Random Thought Thursday - On Wednesday or Thursday of each week I will be talking about whatever subject is on my mind at the time. I may talk about beer, cooking, fishing or other things that I enjoy doing. Hopefully these thoughts will be funny and/or entertaining.

Film Friday - Every Friday I will be talking about my favorite movies of all-time. I will also be talking about my favorite actors/actress of all-time. I may play the 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon game...I was the master of that game in the late 90's.

RIP George Michael

Legendary sportscaster George Michael passed away today at the age of 70 after a 2 year battle with a cancer…and a little piece of my childhood died with him.

Nationally known to television audiences for his Emmy award winning Sports Machine, George Michael was MY sportscaster. One of the great things about growing up in the NOVA area was being able to see George on a daily basis…I just shared him with the rest of the world on Sunday nights. George reported and covered many sports that others did not, including rodeo, NASCAR and professional wrestling. I looked forward to tuning in to see George’s “Wednesday Wrestling” segments. George also covered my beloved Redskins like no other sportscaster before or after him, and his shows like “Redskins Report” and “The Joe Theismann Show,” enabled inside looks at the team long before the Internet, ESPN and blogs that we have today.

The “George Michael’s Sports Machine” was a pioneering program that paved the way for SportsCenter and shows of the like. Long after ESPN 2 and SportsCenter started airing 24 hours a day, I continued to watch the Sports Machine. I’ve been humming the music that was played coming in and out breaks during the show all day. The Sports Machine is a piece of pop culture…and it reminds me of my childhood.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Michael on 2 different occasions and I said the same thing to him each time “George, I loved you in Silence of the Lambs.” George would laugh that familiar laugh that I grew up listening too and say, “if you blinked you missed me.”

Well George, I didn’t miss you then…but I sure miss you now.

Lazy JC: How I Really Hate Em

Anyone who's know me for the past 32 years, would know, this week especially, that the title of this post would be directed at the Dallas Cowboys. I've hated them as far back as I can remember. Hated Danny White. Hated Randy White. Hated Ed "too tall" Jones, hated Tony Dorsett. Hated Tom Landry, even though I thought he was a class act, but he was a Cowboy. I even hated the Minnesota Vikings for several years, for making that awful Herschel Walker trade, which paved the way for the Cowboys to become good again. You know I hated Troy Aikman, Emmit Smith and Michael Irvin. Recently it's been easy to hate the Cowboys, they employed very hate-able clowns like T.O. and Pacman Jones. I met Tony Romo at Tiger Woods' event in Washington D.C. this past summer, and wanted to hate him, but he seemed like a nice guy. Then I saw that he could out drive me, and had a lower handicap, so can I hate him, again.

The problem with this week is, for the first time I can remember, I'm not sure if I want my Washington Redskins to blow the Cowboys off the field. In fact, there's a part of me that wants the opposite to happen. I'm as confused as I'm sure you are reading this.

Let me explain. I've been a Redskins fan my entire life and, as most fans this year, am absolutely sick about the state of the team. I've tried to find the silver lining in the moves the team made the past few years, hiring the owner's racquetball partner as head of football operations, hiring an offensive coordinator before hiring a head coach, then, once they realized that no established coaches wants to come anywhere near this train wreck, hire said offensive coordinator to be the head coach, even though he'd never even been as much as a coordinator before. I've watched as they draft three receivers in the second round, while the offensive and defensive lines go neglected. Watched them throw huge signing bonuses at flash-in-the-pan players, while trading hard to come by commodities (like a shutdown cornerback), for easily obtained talent (productive running back). This year, I've watched the circus continue, as the racquetball partner proclaimed to everyone that the team had playoff talent, as they signed guys off the couch to bolster their terrible offensive line. Still, I tried to find the good in it all, the racquetball partner resigned. The son of one of the most recognizable and respected Redskin coaches was hired to run the team. They got a decent punter, for once. The kid they drafted in the first round has provided some badly needed pressure on the opposing quarterbacks, and the guy they threw $100 million at has helped him, during the 60% of defensive snaps that he plays. I thought that, perhaps, playing for a contract would bring out the best in the misused, damaged-goods quarterback who spent half of last season (and most of this season) pulling turf out of his helmet. At times, it has happened.

But, they started 2-6 against, arguably, the easiest schedule in football. The offensive coordinator-turned head coach was stripped of his play calling duties in favor of a guy who'd been volunteering at the bingo parlor. All a Redskins fan could do was endure the inevitable beatings that were sure to come, and wait longingly for that top pick in the draft next April.

Then the bastards knock Kyle Orton out of the game, make a few plays offensively, and beat the Denver Broncos, who'd started the season 6-0. They outplayed Dallas, Philly, and New Orleans for large stretches, before blowing all three games late. They go into Oakland and blow them out. Now, with a remade line paving the way for explosive runners Rock Cartwright, Quinton Ganther and Marcus Mason (huh?), the crappy, '09 Redskins, at times, have looked like the '83 Hogs. For a few games, at least. Still, last week's performance against the Giants, at home, on Monday night, leaves D.C. anxiously, but cautiously, waiting for the showdown with the Cowboys this Sunday. While I'm sure the Giants game reminded most fans that this is still a bad team with many fundamental problems, and everyone realizes that Dallas is a better team, the small glimpses of hope the Redskins gave their fans the four weeks before Monday night has a few hoping that, maybe, they can pull this one off. After all, it's Redskins-Cowboys. Throw the records out the window. Anything can happen, right?

Here's were we get to my confusion. I know that my football team is a bad football team. I know that there's going to have to be major changes made in the offseason for the organization to turn things around. I also have little faith in the people who are going to have to make those changes. Bruce Allen comes from a legendary football family, and actually has a nice football resume', but he still has to work for Dan Snyder. I do know one thing, that losing to the Cowboys makes the owner of the Redskins very mad. I'm sure that, witnessing a big Cowboys win, in his own stadium, a week after another division rival embarrassed his team at home, will enrage him, to the point that may ensure that those changes get made. To the point where he actually allows the football man he's hired to run the team, to run the team. I've never wanted the Redskins to lose a game, but can you see the bind I'm in? What to hope for? Instant gratification (I have a wing party at Hooters riding on this game!)? But, would a win give the clown calling the shots false hope for this team? Would he continue to think that they're only a few pieces away from a real contender? Or do I hope for the greater good, a rousing defeat at that hands of the hated rivals, and decisive change that may renew this once great franchise?

I know that, as a sports fan, I've never felt this way about any team I've ever supported.

Hey, It's Still Dallas Week!

Having suffered thru one of the worst games in one of the worst seasons in Redskins history you may be asking yourself..."what do I have left to root for?" Well, it's Dallas week, and a win this weekend against our most hated rivals can seriously screw up the Cowboy's playoff hopes.

This rivalry still means something and even when it seems the underdog in the series has no chance...the underdog always seems to rise to the occasion. In this case the Redskins are 6.5 point underdogs in their own house...and rightfully so after Monday night.

I'm hoping the Redskins show up on Sunday night and give me a late Christmas present and something to remember from the 2009 season. We're 4-10, what are you going to do? It is what it is. Let's beat the F'in Cowboys and look forward to 2010. HAIL!

Look, we all know that the Redskin’s press conferences and press releases that happened yesterday have a certain amount of bull shit to them. Luckily for you, my valued reader…I have a bull shit detector/translator that I have used to put said “B.S.” into plain old English.

Vinny Cerrato:

"I'm thankful to Dan Snyder and other members of his ownership team for the opportunities I've been given over the years."

TRANSLATION

The biscuit wheels have come off this gravy train, I can no longer brown nose my way any longer.

"I've had the pleasure of working with some great coaches such as Joe Gibbs, Greg Blache and Sherman Lewis, great people on the Redskins staff, and, most especially, some of the best professional football players in the world. I wish them all the best," Cerrato said. "I've also had the privilege of working for a franchise supported by the most loyal fans in the NFL."

TRANSLATION

Jim Zorn is the asshole that got me fired…I gave him the best professional players in the world and he F’d it all up. And to the fans who started revolutions and made signs…you win.

Dan Snyder (on Vinny):

"More importantly, he is my friend, and he has always been there for me and the Redskins," Snyder said. "He's the consummate optimist and has always made decisions based on what would be the best for the team."

TRANSLATION

He’s a decent racquetball player who was crazy enough to think we could win with that offensive line.

"Obviously, Bruce has got the authority," Snyder said. "And when he makes a decision, the club makes a decision, it's a Redskins decision. ... I've not been as involved as people may have thought. In terms of the future, obviously we're going to be counting on Bruce to help lead the way."

TRANSLATION

This mess is Vinny’s…not mine. Moving forward Bruce will make the decisions (after I tell them what they are i.e. Shanahan.) The decisions will now be made under the new codeword “Redskins” decisions.

Dan Snyder (on Allen):

"Bruce Allen is the personification of an NFL winner," Snyder said. "Our fans know his heritage; we know his abilities. He is the right person to lead our club."

TRANSLATION

I’ve gone back to the glory days again…the fans loved it with Joe…my approval rating should rise instantly. I think I’ll wear my belt buckle to the press conference and buy Bruce and I matching ties.

Remembering Sean

On Nov. 27th it will be two years since Sean Taylor's passing. It's still hard to imagine that he's gone. This is a re-post of a blog that I wrote last year and an Animoto that I made as a tribute. The 2nd YouTube is the Redskin's official tribute.

I was watching a Skin's game a couple of weeks ago and I was wearing my Sean Taylor 75th Anniversary Jersey (happens to be my favorite out of my collection). I was enjoying all the stress and excitement of the game when my 4 year old son asked me a question.

"Daddy, who's jersey is this?"

"This is Sean Taylor's jersey," I replied.

My son then walked up to the TV and stood in front of it, his nose only inches from the screen. He stared intently at the TV for a few seconds as I asked him as politely as I can (while watching a Skin's game) to please move out of the way.

"But Daddy, which one of those guys is Sean Taylor?"

After stumbling around for a couple seconds I came up with,
"Sean's not playing today."

Wow, how could I answer that? It's a life and death question that he is not ready for, and quite frankly...maybe I'm not either. But that simple answer is not enough.

I remember so many things about Sean. I remember how excited I was that they picked him over Kellen Winslow. Excited, because I felt Taylor was a once in every ten years type of difference maker. An added bonus to this scenario brought my favorite player to the Redskins in the 3rd round.

I remember how he intercepted a pass and returned it for a TD in his very first pre-season game. It was the Hall of Fame game against the Broncos, and Joe Gibbs's first game back.

I remember how his teammates nicknamed him "Meast", because he was part man-part beast.

I remember how he may have been the best running back at the University of Miami, but he played Safety. Frank Gore, Willis Mcgahee, and Clinton Portis were the teams RB's.

I remember how he scored a TD in the Eagles game in 2005 to clinch a playoff birth, then scored another TD in the Bucs game to seal a playoff victory.

I remember how Receivers feared going across the middle against him. No, they feared him wherever they were on the field.

I remember hearing that he got shot, and that he was clinging to life. It seemed so surreal.

I remember thinking he was so strong, he was going to pull through...but I guess God had a better plan for him.

I remember the media reporting bogus reports, implying that this was somehow Sean's fault, some sort of retaliation for something Sean did.

I remember for a split second thinking what the media reported.

I remember the media not recanting their bogus stories. I myself am sorry for my momentary lapse in thought.

I remember thinking how there was no way the Skins would lose the following week against the Bills. They did, but then rallied as a team to make the playoffs.

I remember learning just who Sean was. The person, the teammate, the friend, companion, and father.

I remember it all, and I will continue to remember.

And some day, when my son and I are ready...I'm going to tell him all about Sean Taylor.

Full disclosure...I'm a huge Kenny Mayne fan and have been since the mid 90's. But, I'm not the only one, you can count Jerry Seinfeld and Justin Timberlake plus many others (Mrs. Pickle) as Kenny Mayne fans. From the dry and witty humor first displayed on SportsCenter...to the make believe stories that appear on the Mayne Event and Mayne Street, Kenny never fails to entertain and generate a few laughs. FP: Best thing to come out of Seattle…Pearl Jam or Starbucks?

KM: Not a fair fight. Pearl Jam. Love the new album. Saw PJ in Los Angeles a few weeks ago. I do love Starbucks coffee but hate the fact employees are trained to charge the highest price possible. I want three shots in my Americano. I want those three shots in a tall cup. I want to know why I am charged more for that..having saved Starbucks paper and water...than had I just taken the three shots in the Grande cup, in which three Americano shots come. Yes, it is a small rip-off in terms of money stolen, but I like the world to be right. Second, the guy who runs Starbucks sold my Sonics to people from Oklahoma who then moved the team. So, yeah, my answer is Pearl Jam. Three shots of Pearl Jam are cuts 5,6,7 on the new album. But I like it all.

FP: What was your favorite SportsCenter catchphrase?

KM: I like it when Stuart Scott says "You gotta Rise UP-ah." I like it when Neil Everett says "Right Now" at the end of the tease. I like it when Scott VanPelt gets silly. I didn't like it when he said "its business time" because I was going to use that but he said it first. I think it's OK to use another's line if you then quickly attribute. It's business time. Scott VanPelt said that. So did those guys on HBO. As for mine, if it's just one, I'll go with "He's going to get his name in the paper."

FP: Nicknames you’re known by?

KM: My friend Mark still calls me Spoon, after an ex-Sonic. Wheelo is another one. That's a play on my odd middle name, Wheelock, a family name.

FP: Would you ever do a radio show?

KM: I would have a radio show if I were paid to do one and it didn't last a long time and it didn't come on the air that often. I'm not lazy, but I like not having to perform each day. In one way or another, I work seven days a week during football season but I also can create plenty of family time. As long as I get my story done no one cares what the actual hours were. So, I wouldn't right now want to trade what I do to be married to a radio schedule.

FP: Best meal you can cook?

KM: I blend ice with orange juice well. It's an art. But then you have to clean the blender.
I am pretty solid with steak and baked potatoes. My scrambled eggs are restaurant quality.

FP: Favorite TV show and movie?

KM: Ever? Probably Johnny Carson. I love CBS Sunday Morning. The pace of it is nice. It's educational, thoughtful. I'm not naming a PBS show just to name a PBS show but I also love Frontline. Can't go wrong with HBO. Whatever HBO's next thing is, that's usually good. I miss Tim Russert. I like Hardball with Chris Matthews. I want the news shows, even the ones where there's lot of opinion to be handled by someone doing it fairly. I also watch International History Channel. While I was in bed after surgery in June I watched a doc on Pencils. Really.

FP: You could throw a football 70+ yards in college, what’s the over/under on your longest throw at 50?

KM: I just won that bet the other day. It was on TV. I got 50 with one step and a bad ankle. I'm setting the new line at 60 once I can get some run-up.

FP: Largest amount you’ve won on a single bet in horse racing?

KM: I think I brought in something like 5k on one single bet. I've never won a Pick-Six. I like Pick-Fours. I like the Breeders' Cup. It is my favorite event of the year by far. Leaving for that soon.

FP: When winning a bet do you prefer “winner, winner, chicken dinner,” or “straight cash homey?”

KM: I'd quote Randy Moss.

FP: In your book you said you were going to break out the electric tackle football game again…have you done so?

KM: Yes. We played it at work recently. I brought it in as a prop. It's still under my desk. Stuart Scott and I used to play fairly often. Need to get that going again. We keep stats.

FP: Mark Sansaver hit 843 wiffle ball home runs, how many did you hit?

KM: I lost track of my total. It was nowhere near Mark's number. I still possess an unhittable spit ball when on the hill.

Part Of The Solution

Earlier this week I started what was supposed to be a series of posts documenting the issues of the Redskins front office. I realize now that I was starting to become part of the problem, not the solution. Oh, believe me, I’ve got major issues with Dan and Vinny…and the next post I had planned was to focus on bad draft picks, free agent moves, etc. I mean I’m still pissed we are going to go into this game against KC with an offensive line that features a bunch of non-drafted guys and a guy who was out of football for three years. Everyone knew the O-line was an issue, it lacked depth and was getting old…but the front office ignored this. But, I’m not a journalist and it’s not my job to break down information that most of you Skins fans already know. What I am is a huge Redskin fan who happens to blog about them. It’s time to be a fan.

As fans, we can’t change the state of the Redskins. Wearing black to the game and not buying hotdogs is not going to change the product on the field. You paid your hard earned money for those tickets and I agree that your voice should be heard. But, when you attend a game at FedEx, you are going to that game because you want to see your team win! You want to sing “httr,” after they score. The players play hard, they may not have been put in the best position to win…but they want to win. CHEER them, don’t boo them. A win against KC followed by a win against the Eagles and the Skins are back in this thing. Is that what you want as fan? Or do you want to continue to bitch, moan and overall be miserable?

The Redskins season and the Redskins franchise are not dead…so don’t wear black to the game Sunday. I suggest something more attractive, like burgundy and gold. Treat yourself to $10 beer and cheer for the Skins. Be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem.

The hiring of Jim Zorn

Dan and Vinny were like a “monkey f’ing a football” during the entire process of hiring a head coach after Gibbs left. What should have been a swift and efficient process turned into a month long soap opera that ended in a…WTF? Here’s a look back at the decisions that brought Jim Zorn to the Redskins.

Ignoring Gibbs

After Gibbs decided to retire after the season, it was said that he (as well as many players) endorsed Gregg Williams for the head coaching position in a meeting with Dan. Of course Dan let that endorsement from the most influential figure in Redskins history go in 1 ear and out the other. But why would Dan listen to the old man? Well, one good reason would be that Dan was still paying Gibbs his 6 million a year as a “consultant.” Another great reason was the fact that Gibbs just led the Skins to the playoffs 2 out of the last 3 seasons…and knew the team better than anyone. Or maybe because Gibbs won 3 Super Bowls and has forgotten more about football than Dan will ever know. Of course Dan strung Williams along for 10 days or so before not only not hiring him, but giving him his walking papers as the D coordinator as well (although Williams would have never stayed, Dan still has to maintain the power.) Dan was wrong not to hire Gregg Williams as the head coach. Not because he was the right man for the job (I’m not sure that he was and not sure he would have been successful either,) but by not listening to a great football mind like Gibbs…something Dan refuses to do. FAIL #1

Promoting Vinny

The next step to finding a head coach was to take a moment and…promote Vinny to Executive VP/Football Operations. The Redskin’s official press release announced that Vinny “will assume responsibility for all aspects of the team's football organization - including personnel, the team roster, scouting and salary cap management.” This is a great way to lure the “cream of the crop” of head coaches…let them know they’ve got to report to Vinny and defer to him on all personnel decisions. Now that’s got to sound attractive to a Cowher-type doesn’t it. FAIL#2

Meet your staff Coach

Next came the revealing of the “mystery candidate,” Jim Fassell. This would end up being the 2nd time that Dan left Fassell at the altar. Dan and Vinny strung him along while they were supposedly trying to assemble his coaching staff, which would feature Rex Ryan as D coordinator and Jim Zorn as the O coordinator. Ryan never had an interest in joining the Redskins in this capacity, but Zorn was hired as the O coordinator, based upon the fact that Dan and Vinny were “blown away” by his interview. Dan and Vinny then inked up Greg Blache as the D coordinator and now basically have an entire staff for their still unknown head coach. Just a quick recap, the incoming head coach now basically has his entire coaching staff already decided, and must defer all football decisions to Vinny. FAIL#3

Suit it up, Jim

Zorn was not a “hot commodity” for O coordinator positions around the NFL; he had never advanced past QB coach at any level in the NFL. He wasn’t the “young, sexy pick” to be a head coach in the NFL…that would have been Josh McDaniels, whom I believe the Skins never interviewed. Zorn was 54 years old and basically was only know for his “quirky” training methods. He had never called plays; he had never devised a game plan. He was never in charge of more than 3 players. But Dan and Vinny were blown away. And as the candidates began to dwindle…the job was now the equivalent of going out on a first date with a girl who’s 6 months pregnant…Dan and Vinny invited Zorn to interview for the head job. “Suit it up, Jim.” FAIL#4

The rest is now history. Zorn was named HC, OC and QB coach. Severely over his head…and he hasn’t been able to get his head back above water. I’m afraid that he’s close to no longer being able to tread water…and that’s where the Skins are at this point.

Giving The Redskins Some Tough Love

The sites been quiet the past several days, quite honestly I’ve been pretty numb about the Redskins. For the first time in forever, I don’t have a positive spin to put on the situation. I’ve been an eternal optimist in regards to the Skins, but I no longer see a light at the end of the tunnel. After some hard thinking and long analysis (otherwise known as drinking heavily) I have come to one conclusion…it’s the front office’s fault. I hate to write negatively about the Redskins, but sometimes you have to sit down and have a talk to those that you love, give them a little "tough love."

A couple weeks ago on ESPN Countdown, Tom Jackson said it best (I’m quoting from memory, may not be word for word) “Dan Snyder wants to win, he just doesn’t know how to win.” “He’s like a guy who’s got a leaky roof…but he ignores it and keeps on fixing up his basement.”

Of course everybody has an opinion on whose fault it is (i.e. Riggo YouTube,) it’s Zorn, It’s Campbell, it’s Snyder or it’s Cerrato. It’s clear to me that it’s the front office. The decisions being made out of Ashburn are clearly made by the tandem of Dan & Vinny…and quite frankly, it’s not working. These 2 peas in a pod can continue family movie night and their racquetball dates, but Vinny has to go for this organization to succeed. And when Vinny does go, Snyder must give full control to a great football mind and let them re-build this once proud franchise. A franchise that now gets booed at home at home regularly, and whose 2 wins have come against teams that lost last week by nearly 50 points.

This is the environment that Dan and Vinny have built. A team that struggles against the worst teams in the NFL, which means the Redskins, must be one of the worst teams? A team that cant’s score 20 points a game and hasn’t beaten a team by double digits since Gibbs left town nearly 2 years ago. As fans, we know the players on the field are playing hard and to the best of their abilities…unfortunately the front office is not putting those players in a position to succeed.

My next post will focus on the decisions that Dan & Vinny have made that have gotten the Redskins to where they are today.

10/11-13 Happy Bday Nolan Reimold & Gregg Olson

Happy birthday Nolan Reimold. Nolan just finished his rookie season for the Orioles. It was an impressive campaign that saw him win AL Rookie of the Month honors in June and garner some media attention for AL ROY. Alas, his season was cut short by an achilles injury. Overall Nolan batted .279 with 15 HR’s and 45 RBI’s. He also showed some surprising speed on his way to stealing 8 out of 10 bases. Nolan also spurred Fatpickle to create these T-shirts that are soon to be classic collector’s items. I look forward to watching Nolan excel for the Orioles in the years to come. Happy 26th Mr. Reimold.

Happy birthday Gregg Olson. Gregg played 6 seasons for the Orioles from 88-93’. He won the 89’ ROY award (beating out Ken Griffey Jr.,) when he went 5-2 with a 1.69 ERA and saved 27 games for the “Why Not” Orioles. Blessed with a devastating, knee-buckling curveball, Gregg saved 160 games and had a 2.26 ERA during his Oriole tenure. His 160 saves are #1 all-time in Orioles history. Gregg was inducted into the Orioles HOF in 2008. Happy 43rd Mr. Olson.

Happy birthday Skip Hicks. Skip played 3 seasons for the Redskins from 98-00’. His best season was 98’ when he started 5 games and rushed for 433 yards and 8 TD’s. Skip was drafted in the 3rd round out of UCLA where he still holds the record for TD’s in a season (26) and a career (56.) Happy 35th Mr. Hicks.

NFC EAST

NYG A couple weeks ago I said they may not make the playoffs; wrong…they win at least 11 games, F me to tears.

PHI Mcribb better get healthy fast…or risk losing his job, especially since he’s the 3rd best QB on the roster.

DAL The Cowboys should never ever throw the football when all their RB’s are healthy, period.

WAS Zorn’s been around the West Coast offense for nearly 20 years, same amount of time I’ve been with my wife. I don’t need an “extra set of eyes,” to know what offensive plays to run on her.

NFC NORTH

MIN My hatred of this team is growing like the ugly beard on Brad Childress’s face.

GB This team would be so much better if they could just protect Rodgers.

CHI Jay Cutler and Nuke Laloosh may be the same person.

10/5 Happy Bday Rex Chapman & Chris Whitney

Happy birthday Rex Chapman. Rex played 3 seasons with the Bullets from 92-94’. Rex is one of my favorite basketball players of all-time. He could take you to the hole and dunk on you, or hit fall away 3’s from 30 feet. I especially liked his jump shots that seem to arch all the way up to the rafters before swishing thru the net. Rex won many a game with last second 3’s (search on YouTube,) including the season opener in 94’ against Shaquille O’Neal and the Orlando Magic. Rex’s amazing hops also earned him a spot in the NBA’s dunk contest where he dunked 2 balls (one with each hand.) During his tenure Rex averaged 15.6 points per game. Rex retired after 12seasons in the NBA and now serves as VP of player personnel for the Denver Nuggets. Happy 42nd Mr. Chapman.

Happy birthday Chris Whitney. Chris played 8 seasons for the Bullets/Wizards from 95-04’. Chris appeared in all 82 games 4 times during that span. Chris ranks 1st all time in FT % for Washington at .879, and 3rd all time in 3 pointers with 489. His best season came in the 01-02 when he averaged 10.2 points and 3.8 assists. In retirement Chris started a company with former teammate Jahidi White. Happy 38th Mr. Whitney.
